Jarry was pretty good 3 yrs ago
Then became so bad that he lost his job
He’s been better this year but it’s still a huge risk
From the Oilers perspective, they ain’t winning with skinner so it’s no risk trying something else. A low cost option since they don’t have ammunition for a real proven upgrade

whoops -had last years stats up.
they are barely in a PO spot and I expect Fla, Mtl and NJD to pass them very soon. Probably the Leafs as well.

This doesn’t make any sense for Edmonton. Skinner, while having many faults, has 50 GP as the playoff starter. And Jarry is double the cost and double the term of Skinner. Such a a bad trade.

Hasn't Kulak pretty much been their most stable and reliable defenseman this season?

Jack Campbell comes off the payroll in 2030 so eventually they will need to replace that dead cap space with someone.

In a cap world I'd consider it pretty high risk, low reward for the Oilers. Jarry is in year 3 of 5 years at 5.4 while Skinner is upcoming UFA. Not to mention they lost a decent defenseman.
Again, there is a reason the Pens did this.

I would have thought Skinner for Jarry straight up would have been bad for the Oilers due to their respective ages, cap hits and contract lengths. Adding Kulak and a 2nd is flat out terrible asset management.
Locking in and banking on a 5.375M goaltender who was on waivers just last season to be the difference maker for them during the three year window McDavid gifted them is absolutely hilarious.
Additionally - waiving Stetcher only to then trade a top 100 pick for a #8 defensemen a couple weeks later is the cherry on top.
Oilers are no good.

My guess is that he quietly asked to be traded and was told he has to go out and show he has some value for someone to take him.

Really glad it wasn’t Saros from Nashville.
Jarry will have his ups and downs, but moving Kulak will bring a more porous defense in front of him, so I can’t see this being a positive for the Grease.
I expect Skinner to build on his improved play of late and he’s going to a much more sound defensive team and better organization.
Overall, keep it up Bowman…

They have to make a change and they have no assets to get someone better. That’s what I meant in term of risk.

I expect Skinner will have a save percentage north of 0.900 for the remainder of the season. Absolute fleecing of the Oilers by the Pens.

All the other goalies rejected offers this summer or invoked their No trade clauses allegedly.

As a fan of both Skinner and Kulak, glad to see them out of that dump. Patiently awaiting the Skinner redemption arc.

At best 50-50 it works out
But, they had to do something.
I’d take Jarry and Ingram in the playoffs over Skinner and Pickard any day.
Oilers fans should be pretty happy. It’s a change that cost nothing. It may not get better but it’s not like it’ll get worse.
And they can always win another lottery

Reddit Oilers hates the deal. Much less pom pom waving over there compared to HF

GOAT!

$20 says the Oilers thought it was Paul Statsney, and now they're like... "wtf, this guy's a defenceman? ewwww"

Not really, he has improved over the course of the season but in late Octover and through most of November he was pretty bad and was pretty regularly a negative player while playing 14-17 minutes per game. I think that was in large part a structure/team thing but he is also a 31 year and that is around the age where NHL players start to slow down.

31 is just getting into the sweet spot for an Oiler.
