I'd actually love that because I hate the Ducks, but the Flames had a pretty clean record against the Blackhawks as well, but this year they had our number. I think the Ducks are a much better team this year with coach Q at the helm.

I've put a lot of thought into this, and I think the best way to avoid becoming Buffalo is to just not do all of the Buffalo things. Like, do some of the Buffalo things... like the things that gets the players initially... but then stop doing the Buffalo things after that. Do... other things. I haven't figured out which things yet, but non-Buffalo things is definitely where the starting point is.

Anaheim is a good model.
Already had the goaltending but didn't try to fast track it until this year. Collected players near the top of the draft for a few years, then when they had the core in place they brought in a proven coach to put them on course.
We've seen 2 half arsed rebuilds and Anaheim was better than our last one and already on their way to being much better than us again.
Whatever we're doing, the bottom out method is putting it to shame.

Because you are not a real fan if you cheer for losses. And you should feel proud of the players for finishing just outside the playoffs every year so we can stay mid forever!
At least we don't tank, that is for losers like the Avalanche, Penguins, Blackhawks, Kings, and Lightning teams in the past! Oh wait...

Yeah but a lot of us, myself included, were wondering what in the actual hell Verbeek was doing with letting the Rangers off the hook for Bogosian and Krieder, looking to get rid of Zegras, Mactavish being on the block.
I actually thought he was absolutely awful and this happened. So really my opinion doesnt really matter and who knows what will happen.

They signed Ryan Strome as a UFA to a 5 year contract at 5 million a year as a UFA after finishing 22nd overall in 21/22
After finishing dead last in the league the next year (22/23) they signed Alex Killorn as a UFA to a 4 year deal at 6.25 million a year.
They also signed Gudas to a 3 year deal at 4 million a year in 2023 after finishing dead last the year before.
I don’t expect you to let facts get in the way of your argument but if you are dealing in the realm of facts is your suggestion that the Flames problem is that they have not gone out and signed big name UFAs to large contracts during this rebuild?

I've watched a few games, they look like they'll be a dominant force in the west for several years. Beckett Sennecke is the real deal.

They will probably choke against the Oilers like the Kings

I would LOVE to have a "fraud" roster like the Ducks or Sharks.

Do you actually believe the responses to you saying that a top pick this year is important have been "rebuilds never work"?

There was some media speculation that the Flames upper management is afraid to sign off on a "full" rebuild out of fear of becoming Buffalo. I'm not sure if people used that to argue against some of the rebuild talk here or not though.

Well I think that TrentCrimmIndependent is on to something. The thing we are missing is earmarking about 20% of cap space to signing UFAs to multi year deals to help support the rebuild/tank whatever one calls it. To get a roster like the Ducks that is key. Conroy should rebuild like them and drop 21 million this offseason on the UFA market. That is an idea that all factions of Calgarypuck could get behind, follow the Ducks model.

Not those exact words directly. But it's been the general sentiment of people who push back against the idea of a rebuild, and it goes back a very long time.
I've been calling for a rebuild since 07. The way the team lost to the Ducks in 06 and Wings in 07, gave me the sense that this team didn't have the horses to win playoff series vs the better teams in the league. That team relied too much on Kipper and Iggy, and didn't have the right kind of supporting cast to win in the new post-lockout era.
Maybe you can understand my frustration when I see that this team still hasn't picked top 3 in its entire history?
Over the past 2 decades, my calls for a rebuild have been met with responses like rebuilds are for losers, rebuilds are a lotto ticket, picking high doesn't work because look at Edmonton and Buffalo, etc.
So no, no one has directly told me that rebuilds never work. But there sure as heck are people who want us to think exactly that.
Fast forward to 2025, I see a 2-9 start and think ok, finally we're going to get an elite player in the draft. But the team's recent heater has put that into serious doubt. Still too far back to make the playoffs but drifting away from top pick territory. It's a source of some frustration. Another 9th place finish in the west is not what I'm hoping for here.

Come on, you know exactly what I mean.
Leo Carlson, Gauthier, McTavish, Senneke were all drafted in the top 5. With 3 of them in the top 3. We could dream to have that many high picks. It is much harder to find these types of players in the mushy middle.
