Sounds like a typical Flames season.

What was the deal with the Hurricanes? It's like from the opening faceoff they were playing for extra time. Not exactly the type of performance you reserve for home ice.

Always fun to play with stats. Flames are 4-1-1 in their last 6 games. Keep that up and they end up with 104 pts!
They are 5-3-2 in their last 10, keep that up and they hit 88 pts
But if they keep playing at their 27 games of 22 points they will hit 67 pts.
Stats for all 3 crowds. One’s who want playoffs, the mushy middle and the tankers.
Math is fun.

We are really seeing a lot of loser point inflation this season with 95 points landing a top 10 pick.

Sorry if I was confusing ... the Flames would need to go on a 95 point pace the rest of the year to not draft top ten. That landing point would be 86 points.

Shots were even in regulation with the Flames blocking a lot more.

Last year the 5 worst teams in terms of games under .500 on December 1st were
Chicago - 6 games under .500 finished second last 21 games under .500
Nashville - 5 games under .500, finished 3rd last 14 games under .500
Montreal - 5 games under .500, made the playoffs finishing 11 games over .500
San Jose - 4 games under .500, finished dead last 30 games under .500
Ottawa - 2 games under .500, finished in the playoffs 15 games over .500
Pittsburgh - 2 games under .500, finished 25th overall 2 games under .500
Seattle - 2 games under, finished 6 games under and 29th overall
Not as many really bad teams this year (Nashville is 5 games under as are the Flames) with Vancouver being 3 games under and two other teams being 1 game under). Last year only San Jose really accelerated their pace with Philly and Boston falling off a bit to 6 games under from 2 games and 1 game over respectively.
Unless the Flames are the Habs or the Sens of this year they are in a pretty good spot to likely finish bottom 5. Whatever most teams are at December 1st is kinda what they are at the end of the year, Sens and Habs last year were huge anomalies.

Not the most exciting of games, but boy are the Canes allergic to shooting the puck. They seemed to be looking for the perfect shot and if it wasn't there then pass, rinse and repeat. Not sure how they do so well each season playing like that.

Hopefully a regression in december (with great play from Rasmus, Coleman, Kadri and the kids)!

More teams than ever are just playing not to lose and banking on the skills comp.
Especially in non rival games where there is less incentive to outright beat the other team. Working for the tie after 60 minutes is the easiest way to play them.
The allure of a 3-2-1 point system is rising.
Bless teams like Colorado who take pride in smoking every team from every division.

I get the sense that the Canes are the team that Maloney thinks the Flames are (or are trying to be). No superstar franchise player. Strong defensively. Scoring spread out among a bunch of guys. Excellent (typically) goaltending.
Obviously we don't have anywhere near the level of talent they do, even without them having a franchise superstar, which makes the whole thing a not very good comparison. On top of that, the Canes are great at cruising through the regular season and one or two divisional rounds of the playoffs, but then crash hard in the conference finals against more playoff-built teams (1-16) in their last 4 trips. Probably not the ideal model we should be trying for.

They drafted top 5 three times between 2013 and 2018 including a 2OA. That's what tankers want, no? The year they drafted Hanifin 5OA they ahd 71 points which is pretty terrible. They just could play worse than Buffalo, Edmonton, Toronto, and AZ.
Their highest pick (2OA) came off an 83 point season. In the mushy middle.

The Flames kept the elite Cane's at bay. They deserved the 1 point.

The Hurricanes have a great roster. They have 2 issues really, you mentioned no elite game changer and that is probably correct. Although they have some really good players.
They are also weak in net, and their goalies don't really bail them out in the playoffs. They have good goalies, but not great goalies. And that usually doesn't go too well in the playoffs unless you are Edmonton.

I think Carolina's problem is they've just ran into juggernaut Florida and Tampa Bay teams.

Because they don't normally play like that at all. In fact they usually play the very opposite to that. Normally they shoot the puck from about everywhere.

They remind me of the Stars who have a trend of folding in the conference final.

"Tankers."
lol. The whole tanker thing is hilarious when you boil it down to one group wants a franchise player on the Calgary Flames, and the other group doesn't.
It's remarkably silly to me for anyone to argue against having a fracnchise player on our roster, but this is the world we're living in these days I guess.
