Eastbound Stoney between Harvest Hills and Deerfoot just absolutely littered with crashes, never seen anything like it on a bare and dry road.

People were driving really strangely on Stoney this morning. Lots of sudden slow downs to like 40-60, some people never getting above 70-80. Roads were totally fine for me.

Yeah the mainline in both directions were fine, just snow patches as usual for on/off ramps. Not ideal for the typical trash tires most people have but the crashes were all on the mainline. 3 lanes, dry, no curve or hills.

I swear with the increase in complete garbage, Chinese made tires for $89 this is getting worse for a lot of people.
I was driving around all day and people are just getting used to the conditions again.
On an unrelated topic, Acey, since you know a lot of things related to the ring road construction project and other road projects in general I was wondering if you had the answer to this???
Someone pointed out to me that a lot of roads like Deerfoot, QE2, Stoney Trail all share similar characteristics. Where large signs and underpasses are located, the road surface under them becomes a more "rough" pavement and then becomes a lot smoother prior to and after sign/bridge. I thought they were nuts but driving up to Airdrie and some other places I noticed this trend a shocking amount almost like clock work. Any thoughts?

probably due to water draining off signs/bridges coupled with freeze thaw it would increase the impact on the surface.

It seems more deliberate and more of an engineering perspective. Almost as if they bypass the paving just before/after. More man made than mother nature

My guess is that it's intentional to have a more abrasive surface (better grip) where vehicles are more likely to manoeuvre/slow/accelerate. And google confirmed this to be correct.
Very interesting, I've never noticed this

There is nothing in Alberta road construction specifications about changing the road surface near overhead signs and bridges. It's all paved the same throughout. Changing the roughness or texture of the road would be a nightmare to administer contractually.
I can only assume powderjunkie's google search pulled up something about rumble strips as a traffic control method.

Yeah as Mazrim said I've never heard of any intentional effort to do this and it's not in any design spec I've seen.

The UCP had those sections redacted. If curves digs into this any further they’re at great risk here. Tread carefully.

I didn't mean to suggest that it was fully mandated in Alberta, but HFST is definitely a thing...
https://rosap.ntl.bts.gov/view/dot/5...s%20as%20well.
BC appears to have trialed this in a number of locations including off-ramps (no idea if it ever became a formal requirement)

Is that basically what they tested maybe 20 years ago between the park gates and Canmore? They put some down on the Banff Minewanka overpass as well, but it didn't stick well there.

Anyway, the real reason is that they are Jewish Space Laser shades. If you have to ask why, you just don't get anything about our world.
