I've never understood that particular shibboleth. If they had a greater number of games played, would you say ‘manyer’ instead of ‘more’? Of course not.
‘Fewer’ is an unnecessary word. French gets along just fine with moins for both ‘less’ and ‘fewer’. Spanish does the same with menos. Hell, English itself never had this rule about using ‘fewer’ until a grammarian made it up in the 18th century.

Fewer is used with countable nouns and less with uncountable nouns.
Also, in French its "moins" for less and "moins de" for fewer. No idea in Spanish.

I'm well aware of that, thank you. I majored in linguistics.
The ‘rule’ that you cannot use ‘less’ with countable nouns was invented about 1770 by a prescriptive grammarian. The English language got along just fine for over a thousand years without any such rule, it's still ignored in conversational English, and the rule does not help formal written English be any clearer or more precise. It's a silly rule.
