Zadorov is another one...Flames could have signed him. Yes he asked for a trade but that was because the Flames wouldn't negotiate with him. His words.

That does not sound like the Oilers leaned into the tank at all. Has anyone done that before?

Exactly.
I thought it was clear that the Flames turned the page and entered into a rebuild that season. We can argue about some of the values (though a lot of them had nuances to them that must be understood IMO).
I still don't understand how people don't see a rebuild. Everything was textbook rebuilding moves, and everything since then has only continued to provide more evidence (aside from Maloney's interview) that the Flames are in the middle of a rebuild.

When the Pens were going after Mario they sold all their goalies and played a 5th stringer. They also sold some other players. Of course, back then you were guaranteed 1OA by finishing last.

Wasn't there an ESPN 30 for 30 on the Pens tanking? Or maybe it was TSN doc? They went to extremes as I recall.

Gee... I wonder which of these is true... the first one, saying the same thing I've said before (the Flames tried numerous times to keep Lindholm, and only traded him once it became clear they couldn't), or the second one which seems to have been pulled out from who knows where...

Dino is not wrong. Lindholm wanted $9.5M and if the flames caved he would have signed it to stay

This clown always attacks me
Lindholm made the Flames a counter offer they could have signed and had a done deal...him and his agent said as much in the media...its been common knowlege unless you are only looking to fit a narrative.

For sure, but that was a hefty premium over what his value was. I guess I viewed "an offer they could have signed" as meaning a realistic offer.

lol goalposts...went from Dino made it up out of who knows where to it was too much anyway pretty quick there lol. Flames final offer was either 8.3 or 8.5 depending on who you ask and they didn't move at all on it. In fact they traded him long before they had to its obvious at that point they said F that we are taking the bag from Vancouver.

Oh, you're doubling down on this.
He wanted 9.5M and didn't budge on the number throughout the process. That's market value plus "extra to get me to stay."
I don't even know what point you're arguing anymore. The Flames made him realistic offers (plural) to stay, he countered with an unrealistic offer and didn't budge, so they traded him.
"That car's worth 40k, I'll offer you 40k for it."
"Nah, I don't really want you to have it, so I'll offer it to you for 60k."
"Hmm... I really want the car, so I can move up to 50k but that's all I've got."
"Still don't want you to have it. Still offering 60k."
"Alright, I guess I'll move on then."
"....oh, but I made him an offer he could have signed!"

You're acting like the offer Lindholm made was a realistic one, which it wasn't. So, yes, you are making things up... or at the very least, obfuscating the truth to make it look like the Flames turned down a fair offer to keep him.
Reminder: He signed in BOS for 7 x 7.75

Most new owners don't have a history of buying a team they love. A team becomes available and they buy it. The guy who bought Washington Commanders had bid for other teams and lost and he owns the Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Devils as well. The guy who bought the Minnesota Timberwolves is from New York.
Its a status symbol for the mega rich.

His hand picked UFA team after a bad season...Flames offered 8.3-8.5 after a great season. Its not outlandish

This has been rehashed over and over, but there are quotes that exist that give a clear picture of what happened with Lindholm and the Flames.
Lindholm received an offer in July that he never agreed to, and there wasn't any negotiations after that. They didn't make multiple offers attempting to overpay, and Lindholm never gave them a hard number that he would agree, the Flames decided to move on.

Quote:
|
“I received an offer in July. But we didn’t agree on that. That was the last time we talked about the contract”, he says. “I actually don’t know what will happen. I just want to take it as it comes. It’s quite close to the trade deadline, and our team has been doing well lately. Hopefully, I can do something good with the Flames.”
|
Quote:
|
“I’ve been here for quite a while and feel incredibly good. It’s a good organization, and I enjoy everything around, the city, and the fans. It’s been good since I arrived. But it’s not just up to me, so we’ll see what happens. I don’t really know how things stand since it’s been a while since we talked. There’s still some time until the deadline.”
|
Aligns with what he said after the trade in that he was willing to re-sign in Calgary, but Conroy apparently never even offered another contract, nor was he willing to give Lindholm whatever he wanted to stay. Conroy indicated to Lindholm's agent that they wouldn't be offering a contract and Lindholm would be traded, which he then was.
https://www.nhl.com/news/elias-lindh...er-after-trade
Quote:
|
Lindholm said his agent had recently spoken to Flames general manager Craig Conroy, who “kind of said that this is the way it’s going.”
|
Quote:
|
“I had a great time in Calgary, loved my time there and [have] a lot of good memories,” Lindholm said. “I tried to work it out, but this is the business side of it. Calgary wanted to obviously do something.
|
Lindholm reaffirms that he would have re-signed in Calgary. So he never "saved the Flames from themselves."

Suspect confirmation bias plays a role in which one you think is true.
