I know that we've learned a lot about messaging in the last 5 years with covid and some of the rhetoric thrown around by political parties, but I'm still blown away by the reasoning level of some people.

"We've been told that climate change would be a disaster for years now!! And I'm still here and doing great, so obviously what a joke that all was! Anyone that believes it is a moron!"

I thought it was a pretty simple message but I guess people just cannot fathom a long term consequence that will not be fun to deal with. Easier to just wave your hands and continue on with your life I suppose...and I get that, but the confidence to then throw it back at someone like a "gotcha" is incredible.

All those fake news organizations or "big ___ something or other" must have gotten to all those climate scientists one by one or something to make them all worry about the same trend.

I'm pretty sad these days with how quickly large swathes of the population seem to disregard experts in their field because it doesn't align with what they want to hear, and will seek out the small minority that may tell them what they want to hear instead. Depressing times.

You’d think half of our summers being ruined by forest fire smoke would hit home for Albertans. But then you see comments blaming the fires exclusively on bad forest management, and you realize that a lot of people are afflicted with impenetrable ignorance, and will believe whatever they want to believe.

Also, it completely disregards the work being done on the threat. Climate change is still very real and still potentially our greatest threat, but the work being done has also pushed back some of the doomsday scenarios.

Anyone remember the existential threat of acid rain? What a hoax that was amitrite?!

You have to question some things about adult men that were so rattled by a teenage girl with autism that they’ve carried an obsession around for 7 or 8 years and are still trying to find ways to take digs at her. Doesn’t reflect well on their personal lives.

It's mostly pretty simple. If they agree humans are causing climate change, they'd then have to accept that they are selfish in that they don't give a #### and won't make changes. By not acknowledging it, they don't have to view themselves as making selfish decision, so they avoid the feelings that would bring, and the need to make sacrifices in their own lifestyles for others. It's really a self protection mechanism against their shallow ego and greed. You can imagine the mechanisms to protect greed would be pretty strong.

So no amount of facts or reason will get you anywhere, because it's not about that. It's about confronting their own weaknesses. And that makes people pretty defensive. Some so much so that they'll strike out against a teenager* that knows how to push their buttons.

*Is she still a teenager? It's more fun to think of her that way considering the mental weaponry she can wield.
