Once Vegas landed Marner it felt like the pick was going to be a lock in the late 20’s or early 30’s. This has been a crazy weird season so who knows?

Would be great if it happens, but still unlikely.
If you sort league standings by point%, they are 13th.
Vegas has played the fewest games in the NHL.

They started white freaking hot too without many signs of slowing down. Injuries really are the great equalizer

They’ve played the fewest games and are 3 points from dropping to 27th pick.

The Vegas pick being between 20-25th would be a win to be honest, the mid teens or lower? Big win. Full expecting around 30th however/

Vegas only played 16 games. If you look at point percentage then Vegas sits at 6th in the West, and 13th in the league. Based on moneypuck, they still have about a 75% chance of making the playoffs.
They were also a bit unlucky with injuries so far. I believe Hill and Stone are still injured, while Hanifin just returned recently. We'll have to see if Hart stabilizes their goalie position and gives them quality minutes, once he's activated on Dec 1st.
I still have a hard time betting against VGK making the playoff, since the house always wins. It would be a ton of fun to have two high picks, maybe get one from Van for Kadri as well.

Agreed.
If the pick is #19 overall it's a huge win.
But anything inside the top 25 would be great, and gets more likely if they sputter a little longer.

I'll be very happy if it ends up around 20. Lots of solid centers projected to go in the second half of that first round right now (Edwards, Shilov, Suvanto, Malhotra, Morozov, Hextall etc). Huge win if we can complement one of those with whoever we take with our own pick. Wouldn't be surprised if they went on a heater and the pick ended up in the late 20s or early 30s though.

20-25 would be fantastic, but I still think they win the division, so 25-32
but if they somehow do a faceplant, well we deserve some good luck

Yup ideal scenario is Calgary gets another couple firsts for Kadri and Rasmus and is able to consolidate them into two top-10 picks this year

I think it's going to be very tough though this year because the top end is highly regarded.

I think for the first time in a long time, management has some optimism about the future, they are getting a top 3 pick, much, much needed.
Ownership needs to play it smart, you got a new building opening up in a couple of years, perfect timing to showcase young superstar drafted players, that your team drafted. This tank will sell more tickets than ownership realizes, over the long run, this investment is well worth the little bump in the road.
That's why I also have a hard time believing that the team is not privately if not quietly shopping players like Kadri, Coleman, and Andersson, strike while the iron is hot, secure a top 3 pick, by trading these players now, the have the certainty in the future of securing such a pick.
Would love to have some extra poker chips in the 2026 1st round, better quality assets to potential get higher 2026 picks, by trading up.
CC don't screw this up

Yeah. NHL teams rarely trade out of high picks. It's more of an NFL thing really because of teams needing QB's badly.

The other thing about trading up is that you have to overpay, because picks have their highest value on draft day
I prefer just focusing on picking well with the picks you've got, and get as many as possible.
Last year, if the Flames had moved up a few spots, they probably would have drafted Reschny anyway. The only time it makes sense is if there is a specific player you want, and you know that another team in front of you also wants that player.

Guess we'll see where it lands. Vegas has a lot of players that have had long term injuries, especially Mark Stone
Once you're outside the top 10, I kinda like trading down over trading up, unless there's someone that dropped that you really want.
