There's one prospect who would be a sneaky-good get from the Leafs though, and that's C/RW Harry Nansi of the Owen Sound Attack. He's 6'3", and a very undersized 179lbs, and was picked by the Leafs in the fifth-round this past summer after a rather lackluster 23 points in 67 games. Many who watched him (including myself) knew that he was much more talented and skilled than what he was showing in bottom-six minutes on the attack, and the fact that he was one of the youngest members of the 2025 draft-class (Sept.10th birthday) gave him more runway than most. This season to date, he sits tied for 5th in OHL scoring, with 7 goals and 29 points in 20 games- on pace for 97 points.
Nansi still needs work on his skating, which will improve drastically as he gets bigger and stronger, but he already controls pace with his outstanding motor and high-end workrate (I considered him one of the hardest-working players in the draft). He's menacingly physical on the forecheck, conscientious on the backcheck, and sports excellent metrics at 5-on-5. Nansi is showing off his passing skills this year, but he is getting the quality linemates now that can finish- even last year, he was good for a highlight-reel play every game. When he fills out, and fixes his stride, he'll be a good one.

More Lebrun on Coleman:

Let me be clear: In no way is Calgary shopping Coleman. But Conroy can’t control teams reaching out.
The interest makes sense. Coleman, 33, is signed for this season and next at a $4.9 million cap hit, and he’s a playoff-type player who won two Stanley Cups with the Tampa Bay Lightning. He would also be a big leadership loss for the Flames, so it’s no guarantee it happens.
But given where the Flames’ season seems to be heading, Conroy probably has no choice but to listen.
As of now, my understanding is that Coleman’s focus is on trying to turn around Calgary’s season and being part of the solution. The idea of a trade has not been on his radar. He has a modified no-trade with only a small number of teams he can be dealt to, so if things get to that stage closer to March 6, he will have a say in things.

I think Coleman is going to bring back a really nice return at the deadline especially if he keeps scoring goals at his current rate.

Coleman gets you a late 1st at the deadline for sure, we'd be stupid to turn it down.
I love Coleman, he's a heart and soul guy don't get be wrong, but we need to do what's best for the team long term.
Flames could end up with 4-5 1st's this year depending on what they're trading, which you could keep or use 2-3 of them to trade up.
Imagine having 2 picks in the top 5-10...

I don't think the Leafs give you leverage when negotiating with other teams because their assets are limited and therefore their offer (likely) stinks. Craig can't be like 'You better pay up because I already got Macelli from the Leafs in my pocket...' as if it's some intimidating offer that another GM would be sweating to cope with.

I think Coleman could net us a pretty return, especially with 50% retention. It's only for one more season, and we are nowhere close to contending.
I think the Stars, given where they're at and the glaring need for cheap players within their lineup, would love Coleman in their middle 6 at under 2.5m. 1st + prospect would absolutely do it. Maybe we take on Lybushkin.

McKenna and Bjorck would be my dream 2026 NHL draft for the Flames.

The stars are a good fit, but it will be interesting how things shape up when Duchene and Benn are back.
Right now, Steel is 3rd in forward ice time. When Duchene comes back, he will lose some of that.
The Stars are being carried by their PP. Their PK is terrible. Coleman is a great 5 on 5 and PK players. Produces away from the PP. 50% RS he is there for 2 years and probably stays on a cheap deal move forward.
Bourque has been ok, but hasn't produced much 5 on 5. 4 points vs 2 on the PP. Coleman has 7 goals, 6 at 5 on 5 and 1 SHG. The Stars have a better top 6 now that they have Rantanen, they need to improve the bottom 6 with players that play a certain style of play and in a certain role. I just don't see Bourque pushing out or improving the top 6 for the next year or 2 and he will eventually make more money than Coleman.
IMO the Flames should go with what they got and stay away from Bourque as the main piece, but the Stars could trade him for an asset and flip that to the Flames. Chicago or SJ would be a great fit

If CGY makes Coleman available there will be a significant number of teams interested, so I’m not worried about a bad return honestly.
I’d still have Dallas as the favorite, just makes far too much sense for both the team and the player.

Frank on the morning show today compared Coleman’s value to Kadri’s and based on what insiders are saying he could get it is a no brainer to max out on Coleman’s value and trade him 50% retained this year.
Flames have less teams to work with. Kadri has a 13 team olno trade list and Coleman has a 10 team list he can be traded to so 8 less teams.

Dallas’ lack of 1st makes it a challenge.

Have they ever traded up? I can think of plenty of times they've traded DOWN, but I can't think of a single one off the top of my head. And I'm not talking about the two 4ths for a 3rd type trade-ups.

Coleman should be shopped - especially on a team with too many wingers at both the prospect and NHL level.
A younger Coleman with 1.5 years left on his deal returned a recent 1st prospect (Foote) and a 1st.
His production and play now is actually better than it was then.
I think he gets you a 1st + if you move him at the deadline with two playoff runs left on his deal.
Everyone looks at Dallas but I think a return to New Jersey could make even more sense, as they have a glaring need to improve their bottom 6.

Not if the pick is unprotected. Because the leafs may well finish outside of the playoffs comes 2028.
