Yup, Bridgeman had 2 or 3 apples, I remember Kent Nilsson got his hattrick goal in the 3rd to go up by one and the hats rained down but the Flames choked and lost by one.

Not the first game after the trade, but it was later that season: https://www.nhl.com/gamecenter/cgy-v.../27/1981020663

And, of course, as still happens today, the player traded away from the Flames comes back to score the GWG -- which was his first goal of the season.

Why did the Flames trade Mel Bridgeman and Phil Russell for Steve Tambellini and Joel Quenville. Mel was one of our best forwards and a leader. Russell was a good defenseman.

Tambellini was nothing special for a M8ckey Mouse NewJersey team and Quenville doesn't play a game in Calgary.

Was salary a factor? Did our pro scouts just blew it? Was there something else that was unsaid.

This trade really hurt the Flames.

I think Steve had some sizzle here from playing on 88 Olympic team.

The trade happened in 1983.

Likely, salary was always a factor in those days, Bridgeman was making over a 100k and they had to pay Lanny, Kent and the incoming Loob

Yeah Tambellini was kind of coveted want he? I vaguely remember being excited about that trade. He put up points on a bad team and was younger.

RIP to Mel. His first season with the Flames was a banger.

Loved Bridgman on the Flames, but I remember that he broke Gary Suter's jaw in the '89 playoffs while playing for Vancouver. Some mixed feelings there as a Flames fan, but he was a great player.

Played with Barry’s kids. He came out to practice once, you could tell he was a pro. I’ve got a puck from his LA days one of his boys gave me.
