Would be super nice if they hadn't have signed Santander after missing out on other free agents. That $20mil could go a long ways this off season.

Can someone please explain the Players Option to me? Like, I get it in principle but does every player get it? Is it only when they hit a certain age or on their first contract? Is it similar to arbitration in NHL with RFAs?

Thank you in advance for your time.

I don't believe every player gets it (someone correct me if wrong), I think it has to be worked into the contract (kind of like if you were trying to work in a NTC/NMC in the NHL). An option contract allows them to choose to stay with a team for another year on an already set salary.

In this case, Bieber chose to stay with us, and at a discount I'd say. I firmly believe he would've gotten more, so it's nice to see that our recently ended playoff run got him to stay for an additional year. Makes that TDL move much worthwhile.

No, you're right. It's worked into the contract. There's player, team, and vesting options which are peformance based.

They also sometimes include mutual options, although those are stupid because if both parties want it then presumably they could have agreed on that without the option.

Padres and Jays have had a history of massive trades, may make sense again, albeit some players may be sign and trade.

I'm not sure a swing-and-miss third baseman whose power may or may not translate is much of a fit for this team.

Dodgers will probably find a way to sign him, anyway.

Muncy is 35 years old and is a free agent.

The Dodgers will 100% be signing this guy to replace Muncy at 3rd base - probably not even a question.

They just exercised their option on Muncy.

Even then it's only $10M - good contingency for 1 year to help transition this guy in

Maybe not - maybe they just sign Bregman...

Sometimes it's a player option (Bieber) and sometimes it's a team option (Muncy, Munoz). All depends on how the contract was structured.

Unless the Jays really lowball Bo, or somebody else comes in with a really stupidly high offer they can't match, or the Jays insist Bo moves to 2B and he doesn't want to, I can't see him signing with a different team.

Every year I find myself wishing MLB free agency wasn't such a slow moving slog.

At least this year there isn't an Ohtani or Soto available that has all the big spenders trying to woo, which clogs up all the rest of the tier 1 and 2 free agents.

Yeah, this year will be different as there isn't a clear-cut #1.

Thankfully it isn't Vladdy...

I wonder if Vladdy could have pulled MORE than $500M if he'd had the postseason he just had and then went to free agency.

The Yankees or Mets would have easily exceed the deal after he dismantled NY

Yes he would’ve gotten more but my guess is Vlad doesn’t have the season he does if he doesn’t sign.
Further, he likely protects himself as the season goes on. And/or the distraction from him not signing all season distracts the team enough that they don’t win the division at very least.

Wouldn't mind seeing the Jays land Tatsuya Imai or Cody Ponce. Couple starting pitchers that have some serious upside, and at the very least would provide some solid depth on that front.

Ponce pitched in the KBO last year and has been away from MLB for 4 seasons now, but when you look at his numbers in the KBO last year compared to Lauer's the year prior, he is very intriguing to say the least. Plus I read that he now touches 98mph with his FB.

Imai has outstanding numbers in Japan, is 27 and features a 4 pitch mix that includes a 99mph FB

Hopefully the Dodgers and Yankees having stacked rotations already, and the Jays recent WS run will help land these guys.
