Good call on the few dishes. When I first moved out I bought a set of 4 (everything) from walmart. 20 bucks or something, and I never had to wash more than 20 dishes.
I'm an opponent of a large cleaning supply purchase. You'd be surprised at what Windex can clean. Pretty much everything except humans and dishes. Big bottle of windex is all I need to clean my pad.
Oh yeah, get candles. Have them stashed somewhere in case of power outage. And matches...
edit* and one more thing, don't be afraid of having a couple of plants. You may kill a couple before you get the hang of it, but they're just nice to have around. They clean the air and chicks dig dudes that can take care of things that are alive.

I think Windex is designed to dissolve crap off glass, not to disinfect. If you are using that on counters and toilets, I think you would start to get a collection of germs over time.

A lot of these have likely already been mentioned, but. . . .
Midicine Kit
Tool Kit
Flashlight
Plunger & Toilet brush
Probably multiple lamps (most newer apatments go without overhead lights in bedrooms, which you don't notice if you only view in the day)
Fire Extinguisher
Clothes Hangers
Baking Soda for the fridge
That's all I can think of off the top of my head in terms of stuff I usually forget when first moving.

Always keep some Gin available... you never know when you'll need a panty remover.

Gross to both. If she's drunk enough to drink either, she's probably good to go anyways... Only kidding. Different strokes and all that.

A can opener.
It's one of those things you don't even think about until you go to make soup for the first time without your mom's handy drawer of kitchen utensils full of devices you take for granted. Actually, take an inventory of that entire drawer and buy one of everything that's in it (or just empty out the drawer when your mom isn't looking).

Cork screw. Even if you're not a big wine drinker, there's always a time that you'll need one, and its a pain when you don't have one.
Will you have a washer and dryer there? Don't forget detergent and dryer sheets.

Cork Screw is a good one...I remember one time inviting this chick over for dinner and she brought wine (I don't drink it, so never needed it) and we fought with it for about 20 minutes before we gave up. Next day I went and got one because you just never know when a chick is going to come over to get drunk off some wine

I am a big fan of Windex but for the stuff that needs disinfecting I find Fantastic to be simple and effective. Same idea as Windex, spray and wipe, but it is also a disinfectant. Those are the only things that you should really need, maybe some of those Mr. Clean Magic Erasers for the walls and tough spots. They are actually magical.
