Considering Rantanen knocked them out of the playoffs last year pretty much by himself they probably should have kept him

But what about the fact that Necas is two years younger and they got a 2nd round pick. How do those factors play in vis-a-vis actually winning for NHL teams?

I think if the Avs could have a do over they would love to use their Nelson assets on Kadri and kept Rantanen. For the same money they have Nelson and Necas. The Kadri deal would only have been slightly possible if it happened this year though all moot point.
Avs were in a tough spot here. They had to keep Necas who is playing well there and was the big piece they got back in the deal.
From the Canes perspective they traded Necas, Drury, 2nd and got Stankovin, Hall, 2 1st.
Also would be interested to see where the Flames would be today if they had traded Tkachuk for Necas ++

Depends on the ++
It's pretty clear Necas wouldn't be a PPG player in Calgary under Huska, nobody ever is or was.

I find it funny the knock against Calgary getting anyone considered really good is always:
"They wont be that good in Calgary"
Perhaps maybe we should fix/change that?
Perhaps its a CGY problem and not a player problem?
Why is Calgary the place where good players go to die?
I'm not saying I disagree to some extent, but I'd say we've got a bigger problem if we seemingly continue to have skilled guys come here and their careers fizzle, especially young guys like this.

Calgary's always been defense first. I think they need to skew more towards offense and creativity rather than shot volume and dump & chase. But that requires the right mix of players and skill, which the Flames might have some shortage of at the moment.
Draft well and keep going for more skill.
EDIT: To stay on topic, I think this deal is fair enough for age/production, but as other's have said, I'd still would have kept Rantanen in the end.

Being in win-now mode I’m still taking older Rantanen + the $500K difference over Necas + picks… but if I remember correctly Rantanen had been asking for even more prior to being traded, so not sure the Avs even had that option.

Well, that is because the talent on this team does not match the Colorado or Carolina teams. Huberdeau doesn't have the same level of players here that he had in Florida. I would say that the Flames are working on that. It just takes time.

Careful with thinking rationally. This community seems to prefer castrophising.

Huberdeau played with Sam Bennett and Anthony Duclair and got 115 pts.
Maybe just maybe it's the coaching and system in Calgary, Huska learned his trade from Sutter, and except for the season where Johnny and Matthew said screw you we're not going to be neutered anymore, the system stinks in every way, players hate it and the fans hate it. the only time it might work is if you make the playoffs but that clearly doesn't happen near enough.

And getting 2nd line matchups in Florida while being on the first line in Calgary and facing teams top shutdown lines. Flames simply don't have the offensive depth of top teams in the league. When an offensive player comes to Calgary they are tasked with heavier lifting and that's usually reserved for elite players which is something the Flames lack and we all know the only way to get elite players nowadays is to draft them, hence the tank.

Frank on the FAN mentioning how Rantanen told the Avs he wanted to be there and they pulled their $11.65M offer and traded him 2 days later. Basically he wanted the $12M and the Avs walked away.

Well, Johnny, Tkachuk, Hanifin and now Andersson can’t wait to get out?

Hmmm and they said it was because of the way we play hockey? Or are there other reasons?

Andersson has made the Flames a contract offer...its more than they want to pay. The other 3 had more to do with geography than system. Hanifin would have stayed if the team was better but what player his age wants to be part of a rebuild?

Tkachuk and Gaudreau never even played for Huska.
Do you have any evidence that HAnifin hated Huska? Andersson?
Anything at all?
