Baseball casual here... why do they announce starting pitchers so far in advance? Then the other team can prep...?

Exactly. Both teams do it so that each manager can prep AKA make a lineup for the game. Usually it's fairly predictable who the starter will be based on a 5 day/man rotation.

It would be a bold call, but it’s either that or a bullpen game (or Bassitt!)

Bieber would be on short rest by a day. Yesavage and Gausman are lined up for 5 and 6.

Yesterday there was a shot of Paul Godfrey beside Eugene Levy. I thought that was pretty cool with bringing in old alumni.

Another newb question.

I have to ignorantly ask how much of that is down to the pitcher's skill/fortitude and how much is luck? I'm asking more in reference to the two innings in a row against the mariners where he got out of bases loaded, one out with two double plays in a row. Both times if the ball is a couple feet either side we're talking runs scored and maybe talking a different story.

So I guess my question is how much can they control where the batter hits it? Both regarding direction and height?

I think there’s mental fortitude when it comes to continuing to make good pitches, and mixing up pitch selection even when things feel like they are falling apart. But there is also a huge luck factor in baseball where inches can make all the difference. Looking at the amount of hard contact being made is often a better sign of how good or bad a pitcher is doing then looking at hits or runs.

I mean, I was sorta hoping to maybe get to see Kershaw and Scherzer face off some how at some point for a couple of innings for the feels, but now that we're in it, I'm not so sure!

Last start imo Scherzer was better than Bieber. I think the goal would be to not need a game 7. But if you do I can imagine doing a bullpen game. Use every pitcher and empty the tank - it's the end of the road either way.

Imo direction is mostly luck. There are definitely some pitchers that get way more groundballs/flyballs, so I think launch angle can be pitcher skill.

Good question. And it’s both, for sure.

The pitchers can make certain pitches in certain locations that would typically favour a ground ball result, which is what you need to get the chance at a double play. And the defense can align themselves to where that hitter typically will hit it.

But, those balls were pretty hard hit so it’s pretty fortunate that they were basically right at our fielders. I would say those double plays were definitely a little lucky. Still, had to execute to have the chance.

Joe Carter has aged well, at 65 he looks like he could still play.

I've decided to go against common sense and bet the under tonight.

$200 returns $800 for win/under

I don’t like declaring guys future Hall of Famers when they’re only half thru their career. We have no idea what kind of gambling or PED scandals could surface to derail that.
