I'd just hope that no significant futures would be a part of a move like that.
Coleman (retained) + Andersson (retained) + no 1st or 2nd rounders.
That'd be the quintessential "walking the line" move, which is what Conroy has been doing all along. I'd probably be less excited about that than if it were to have happened in the Summer...because I think the Flames have a once in 40 years opportunity to truly draft at the top, and everything should be geared towards that...but we'll see.
|
Nah, Conroy loves scouting and drafting players. This start is giving him the excuse he needs to tear it down and do more of that. To construct the team he really wants. He could not continue the tear down last year because of the start they got, and the fact Flames kept going right until the end.
Conroy will be bold.
If he gets Robertson it's to move him along to another team for a #1 Centre and I doubt it will involve us giving up a 1st.
I can't imagine a scenario where he doesn't get his #1 and top pair LHD this season.
26/27 Flames will look radically different. That's what I really hope happens.

The Stars are also a couple of steps back. Definitely not in a panic position but I cannot imagine they are happy to be on the outside of the playoff picture for any length of time. Especially if they are watching the Avs, Jets, and Mammoth(?!?) start running away with the division playoff spots.
Hopefully they get itchy and start thinking about their RD and LW upgrades that they need to acquire.

Buyout candidates?
- There is zero chance they buyout Yegor.
- Bean?
Bad contract exchange?
- Huby is untradable. Maybe Yegor too.
- Farabee is not really a bad contract when he is used right (Coleman's spot).
Coaching change?
- Huska is Conroy's buy, I don't see it. Maybe supporting cast? Special teams coaches? Does that move the needle?
It could also mean retention on players to move them. Kadri, Andersson, Coleman, Lomberg, Frost, Yegor are all candidates (in order of descending value). It isn't something Flames do very often, especially on non-expiring contracts.
What am I missing?

I don't really think there should be any urgency on the Flames' part to buy anybody out. Not with where they're at in their build.

Which of these bad contracts (from the Athletics' list) could we obtain with sufficient picks or prospects to make it worth our while?
Ivan Provorov
Chandler Stephenson
Brady Skjei
Sean Couturier
Ryan Pulock
Cody Ceci
Tanner Jeannot
Will Borgen
Brandon Montour
Mikael Granlund
Maybe Sec214's GIF is a reference to weaponizing the cap space (finally).

Add Toronto to the list.
Sharongovich would be such a BT acquisition. Get someone with some goal scoring prowess to play with Matthews. Watching the Sabres game last night, they are in trouble.

Sharongovich can be the Marner replacement!
Also, I find it funny that Treliving will go down as the GM who lost Gaudreau and Marner for nothing. And he lost Tkachuk, although at least he got something back for that one.

I don’t see why CBJ would give up on him (no rumours that they’re unhappy with Sillinger or shopping him), and I can’t see what the Flames could offer that would make an attractive trade scenario. A late 1st or B prospect is of much less use to CBJ than Sillinger.

Depends on what they can get for him. A bottom 6 player is replaceable and a major disappointment for a lottery pick

The Wizard has nothing to trade and would have to move out cap space. I personally would do Sharangovich for Rielly straight up and give the Wizard an extra 1.75 million to play with. Not sure the wizard would be dumb enough to do that.

Great. We want nothing. Except out of that ugly deal. Win win.

The buyout window is very short and during the summer. There's no such thing as a midseason buyout.

|
Kadri at 50% retained is a valuable asset even if he really starts to slow down, so I don't think it needs to be only win now, but it can also be window opening teams as well. Retention could really increase Kadri's value by minimizing the last couple year risk.

I would love it if the Flames could pick up a Vancouver first in the next 3 years, especially if it isnt top 10 protected.

That first one is really bad for Detroit. Two of their two best prospects and a first?

Calgary - for good reasons.
