"danger zone" to me would be trading the Vegas pick for a 30 year old scorer

Why?
They're almost assuredly not looking to trade the next core pieces (Wolf, Parekh, Coronato)... Beyond those guys, Kadri should get you a great return. I'd argue only Weegar could potentially get you more in a trade.
Who cares if that makes us lean at C the rest of the season? If we're tanking, tank. Make moves while there's still value there.
Plus it opens up roster spots to actually have the youth movement get their feet wet in the league, like other rebuilding teams are doing.
If our C depth to end the year is Backlund, Zary, Kirkland, Kerins, it should also mean we have a lot of new picks & prospects to help the team when we'll actually potentially be competitive again, and more than likely has the bonus of improving the position of those acquired picks in the draft order.

to be clear, I would trade him. I agree with everything you've said.
I'm just saying that I'm not sure the org will be willing to.
I say this because it's almost certainly punting next year as well.

In case anyone is wondering, Kadri will play 1,000 games on Nov 5th against CBJs, as long as he doesn't miss any games. He currently has 993 GP in the NHL.

Thinking more about this article, it's a pretty fantastic piece for the Flames right now. Basically says exactly what Conroy should and likely wants to do -- be patient, don't panic but embrace the high draft pick and make a deal if he gets blown away or if a veteran really wants out.
Everyone in the NHL reads Friedman, owners, executives, players... and the piece provides that context to teams who look to call Conroy to "throw him an anvil," and the ownership group, who might still be putting pressure on him to get wins.

Kadri may be moved, but he hasn’t been a problem. From the outside he looks to have been a good teammate and member of the organization. If he wants out, or the team just moves on, hopefully all parties leave on good terms.

‘Throw him an anvil’ is such an apt and expressive phrase, isn't it? I love it.

Why do we need him to be a flame for his 1000th game though?
I guess its a nice nod to a guy thats been a solid leader for a few years, but it's kind of moot if you're turning around and shipping him off days later.

They did that for Fleury back in the day: kept him just long enough to set the franchise record for most games played, and shipped him off days later.
Since Kadri has a bunch of extended family here in town, he'll probably appreciate getting to play game #1,000 in front of them.

I feel like nothing happens until game 20 at the earliest anyways which is November 15th.
I feel like if trades do happen they happen starting at that point.

Maybe they just already ordered the silver stick, and planned out the whole ceremony a couple of weeks in advance.

I guess so. As long as the flames are a short winning streak from the playoff line, they won't make meaningful changes (yet).
Even wth the horrid start they're 5 wins back of 1st in the west. So the separation isnt as massive as it feels.
But intellectually I think most of us know this team isnt going to be able to put it together to the extent that it needs to to outpace the teams they're up against.
They'd not only have to break through, but play at a higher level consistently after the fact.

Indeed, Kadri would certainly be a hot commodity to any contending team before the TDL. Oh, the possibilities!

If Kadri decides to come out and say he wants to be part of what is going on here and finish his career in Calgary I think the flames would certainly honor that as long as he maintains the right attitude and effort. Maybe that is something he prefers rather than being moved to a team he has only some control over?
I feel like Kadri has to ask out or a team gives Conroy an offer he simply can’t refuse.

in addition to the already solid prospect pool, our own 1st being high this year + having an extra 1st + whatever we get for Andersson and Kadri would set us up pretty well. I just hope the organization takes an honest look into the mirror and accepts that this is how it'll have to be ... there are no quick fixes here. Steer right into the abyss now, benefit from having a young and talented team when the new barn is ready.

Yeah playoffs would require this team to play at an elite clip the rest of the season. Even with a lower playoff threshold of 94 points it's a .623 clip.
On the flip side a top 5 pick is getting pretty realistic, they would need to be 72 points or less most likely based on historical results, and even right now a .473 clip would be needed for 70 points.
These next 3 games against NYR, Toronto and Ottawa were kind of the end of the tougher stretch to start the year. Because even with those teams having tough starts I think they generally provide tough match ups for the Flames .
Lose all three of those and it pretty much means that even playing .500 the rest of way gets you to 73 points only and a bottom 5 pick.

At this point the start has been so bad that you don't even have to steer that hard right to get a good pick this year.
Just make the logical trades (Andersson, Coleman, And eventually Kadri) and you're set up pretty well.

I doubt it happens at this point, and I trust Conroy to make the right decisions. But given the Flames' a) disdain for the R word, and b) "you just have to get in and you never know what happens" mentality, you just never know for sure.

I don't think Kadri gets dealt until the deadline. And it's to either Toronto or Colorado. Though Carolina is likely craving for a guy like him too.
