[GDT] YYC Votes 2025
figured a day thread for the election would keep things cleaner. There was a line up of 30 people at 10;30 am at my polling station, took about 15 minutes to get through (ward 12).

About 35 minutes total to vote, but the line was twice as long when we left. They have to fill out an extra form I've never seen used before that is taking a lot of time, and the guy confirmed it was...drumroll please...due to the manual counting requirements.
So while you are waiting in a needlessly long line, remember why that is before you vote for more UCP stooges. Pretty please.
Now get out there and get your sticker.

Last vote (Federal) I told my toddler we were going to vote. When we left the polling station he cried that he wanted to go on the boat. Stay tuned to see if history repeats.

Going at lunch to the school near me. Spent much of the morning reading each of the participant's platforms on their websites. A good link to each is here:
https://www.electionscalgary.ca/for-...ouncillor.html
Read articles today that voter turnout is expected to be quite low, which is disappointing considering we have an example down south of what happens when voters are complacent. Municipal elections affect our daily lives much more so than provincial or federal ones, yet ones those garner infinitely more attention. Hopefully turnout will be big, but from the people I have talked to it's barely on their minds and most will probably not even bother. But I'm sure they'll turn up on socials to complain for the next 4 years.

Voted (Rocky View). The 10 am start time is kind of stupid.

Longest wait I've ever had. Over a half hour in the gym.
Pretty much the only reason it's taking that long is they're making everyone fill out a form even if you're on the voter roll.

Apparently it's a new requirement from the province. So while you wait in line make sure you mentally thank Danielle Smith for wasting your time. (In addition to thanking her for municipal political parties, and the fact we won't have results until later in the weeks since ballots now have to be hand-counted, which is going to cost several million dollars)

Last night at supper we asked our 5 and 7 year olds if they would like to go along with us today to vote to see how the process works as they had been asking lots of questions about elections (and mortgages weirdly enough), but now I am concerned they think we are going to vote on a boat.
At bed time, my 7 year old said “Dad, is this the election we finally get to kick Donald Trump out of government?” Not quite kid, but I like your moxie.

All the extra experienced voters in line were talking about how they realized they couldn't vote at 8am like they usually do.
Does the Elections Alberta have an explanation for this? Perhaps they know hand counting will require a large workforce later, and didn't want to use them up in the morning hours?

My understanding is that there is a whole horde of students who could use a few extra bucks and something to do.
Sit 'em down in the lunch room and get 'em counting!!

But they don't know how to count because their teachers are on strike.

Took less than 5 minutes. Easiest vote ever, even with a constant stream of people going in and out.

Are we really seeing "lots of people" or is it all bunching up and being delayed due to the archaic "new" system we are using this year. Leading to lineups where in the past there would be none?

Same here. Only reason there was a long line is because it was very slow moving. What would normally be a 5 minute process turned into 30 minutes.

Maybe I'm misremembering but I thought municipal elections always opened later in the day.
I'm standing among a bunch of seniors and I thought age was supposed to bring wisdom LOL. They ain't bright when it comes to how city government works.
