No prospects, no cap space. If they are outside looking in, then they are ####ed.

Full PPs, half PKs, pretty much every offensive zone start and full OTs.
How long do they think they can keep that up?

That's why he took a discount, so somebody can make room.

I think the gig is up. Both players getting older, have played tons of hockey. Neither have worked to embrace a 200’ game for when there starts to be some wear on the tires. The Knob will keep rolling them for 20+ mins per game until one sustains a major injury and then they are screwed. You take one of them away you can shut them down reasonably easy.

Playing your only two credible weapons on the PK to drive up their ice time to over 25 minutes apiece is some of the dumbest coaching I've witnessed.

To be honest, in that scenario, a competent GM could have an expedited rebuild. You’re getting a Lindros level return with McDavid at 12.5 million x 3 with retention. But alas, unless scumbagness was measurable attribute, Bowman is anything from competent. Tallon built the B’Hawks cup teams, Bowman came in, rode the coat tails and then sewered the team with trades like Panarin <-> Saad.

But those shorthanded goal highlights that they'll get a few times throughout the year though. Those will be baller. How else do you think they're going to win 7-6?

But the threat! Other teams don't even try on the PP anymore, they just hope to survive!

Even the foul stench of all the failed rebuild attempts in Edmonton is going to pale in comparison to failing to win a cup with McDavid. That team is every bit as flawed as it has ever been this year.

Not this year.
Next year - maybe.
The year after - certainly.
I also think it's unlikely they miss the playoffs.

The Oilers only made the playoffs by five points last season. While unlikely, it's by no means impossible.

Did the Oilers really improve a lot in the off season. I'd say no.
Are there enough teams in the West to snake 5 points from the Oilers over 82 games? I'd say yes.
While its probably optimistic, this teams only clam to fame is one of the oldest lineups in the league added another year.
They really need Savoie and Howard to step up in a big way, to make up for declines elsewhere in the roster and injuries.
Its also incredibly tough to make the playoffs in the NHL with the loser point, let alone make the finals three years in a row.
The magic 8 ball points to a drop by the Oilers.
I'm on record saying that the Oilers will be this years shocking, holy shyte how did this happen drop of the year.

They also had a ton of games last season that they were losing in only to pull off their miracle score in the last minute junk (often on a gifted PP) and then win in OT.
Maybe they don't get so lucky on every single one of those nights again.

Another way of looking at McDavid’s contract extension is that it may be “priced to sell.” It’s entirely possible his intent wasn’t to fulfill the contract, but it do the Oilers a solid by ensuring he has significant trade value should he want to move this year or next.
If the Oilers are somehow out of it by the trade deadline, I wouldn’t be shocked by a move.

Yep, people think the 2 year extension gurantees he's staying when it pretty much gurantees he's leaving
If he wanted to be there long term he would have signed an Eichel deal. Nothing has really changed, the second they falter he is gone

My guess is they get in by the skin of their teeth but don't make it out of the first round, at which point Mc David will ask for a trade

McDavid didn't want to be seen bolting from a team he just took to the cup final, he is waiting for them to fail so his legacy will be 'he gave them their best shot, no one could blame him for leaving when they declined'

He signed for 2 years and he's doing the team a favor. He knows they don't have much of a chance to do it 3x in a row and they may be lucky to get to round 2. He is being nice to the team so they can still get something for him when he says "I'm done here". I would not be surprised if that is summer 2026.
After this year he has term with a team friendly AAV which makes it easier for the Oilers to trade him to wherever he wants without the team having to jettison too much to make the Cap work. A key player will have to go back and picks and prospects too. But maybe the Leafs (we all know that is his preferred destination) can keep most of their roster together when they trade for him next summer.
