This makes zero sense, one of the most valuable players in the league signed an under market deal to stay for at least 2 extra years.
There a few scenarios:
- Oilers win a cup in the next few years. Long shot it happens but if so he either signs and rides into the sunset as an oiler. Thye may never win again but there’s still a cup. He leaves, but there’s still a cup.
- They don’t win a cup and he forces a trade, it’s an incredibly tradeable contract so you get people back and start your rebuild
- worst case scenario, they don’t win and he walks to free agency amd you get nothing. That sucks but by that pont if they haven’t won with him they never will, so the rebuke is full on.

Clearly McDavid wants to win and they have more money to spend on other players.
I also see this another way as well. This helps soften the blow to the fans if he leaves after the 2 years. No one can possibly be mad if he doesn't win the cup and leaves, after giving the team a 16 million dollar discount.

They immediately spent the savings on Walman? I thought they need defence?

I mean without context this would be a shocking, unhappy day for fans. But with the context of heavy speculation that he was strongly considering playing out the year without contract discussion and then likely leaving for Toronto?
I'd say many are stoked that they have him beyond this year and his same cap hit, as oopsoed to a season of agonizing over whether he's gone this summer.

The savings will be spent on raises for their current players not better players though

When dry cycles signed that long contract last year I was expecting Mcavi to do the same so considering that this is great news it's only 2 years!

I still don't understand why would McDiver sign for two years with no raise. He can get seriously injured.

I spoke to a couple of my pals who are non-delusional Oiler fans (there are a few it seems) and they are not all that excited. Over the last couple weeks they seriously doubted that McDavid would start the season without a contract and were really hoping for a long term deal for several reasons including Drycycle being inked. One of them said for him a 2 year deal really is just like a one year extension as they will all be in the same boat two years from now as they were yesterday. So for them even the bridge is disappointing.

I can't follow the bolded. By that logic, a two year extension is a... two year extension isn't it?

Yeah I cant figure out if this shows that hes incredibly stupid or smart. Could be either, depending on the rationale.
But giving the oilers more of your prime who will not address their issues in any meaningful way at a discount just to be able to exit that hell hole gracefully with no ill will seems like its not worth what it could be costing him imo.
I think if he left and signed with Dallas or Toronto he'd be lifting the cup the following year. Not sure thats happening with this current oilers roster.

I think he meant they have just one year of certainty under the new contract. Prior to the start of year two all the same questions will arise. Deja vu pretty quickly.

I can't believe this moron voluntarily stayed in Edmonton for two more years. They should put him into concussion protocol. He may have a serious brain injury or something.

He's basically saying It's a 1 year extension because if the writing is on the wall come trade deadline in the second year the Oilers can't lose him for nothing. They will go the Flames route ala Iginla. Just get something instead of losing him to ufa.
I hope it ends up like the Iginla trade for the Oilers. Bruins had the better offer but the peguins was Iginlas veto If my older brain remembers. Bruins won it all and iggy choose wrong. I'd like Edmonton experience that as well.
