I would have preferred he left next summer for sure, this contract isn't the commitment to the Oilers some are making it out to be though. All the other teams in the league also have a rising cap...and will probably spend it better around the fringes.

Wouldn't the second year of the new contract just be exactly the same as this year of this contract? I wonder if the people who think they have him for three more years are the same people who were worried about him signing an extension this year?

Exactly. He's looking out for #1 here, himself. Give up a few million and see if that helps with depth on the team over the next couple of years, if not he's outta there. And wherever he goes he'll sign for closer to 20 million that 12. He wants to win, he couldn't care less if that was Edmonton or somewhere else. For now it's the Oilers but the moment it's not........see ya.
