The worst part about this extension is the existence of Sportsnet and how they handle the NHL.

Oilers aren’t winning ####. McDavid is also going to taper off a bit I think. This was an incredibly bad decision by McDavid.

Bet Minnesota wishes it waited a couple weeks…….

It's a good deal for the Oilers for sure - keeps their window open slightly for a few years. But poor McPissy will have to flog Rexall all over the place for all the endorsement money he'll need to get to cover the hometown discount for his NHL salary...

How are you sure he is not going to get the cup? He has made the finals in back to back years, and Florida saved us. If not for Florida, he has 2 cups already.

I hate the Oilers as much as anyone, but McDavid is good enough himself along with Draisaitl to make them a contender. I hate everything about this signing.

Seeing this signing just makes me hate Huberdeau (the player / skater and contract, not the person) even more.

i think if he left now it would be a betrayal and if he stayed and took max money it would be greedy.

So he takes this deal which gives Edmonton 3 years to contend. If he's not happy after 2+ years, they can trade him and no one can say a bad thing about him, he tried.

You can panic for another 3 years if you like...the Oilers are worse than last year. Any cap savings are being more than covered in raises to players in their current lineup. Its more likely than not they dont win a cup so I wont be up at night.

Expensive way to create a nice narrative when you're nearing the tail end of your prime.

He owed them nothing. And whatever he signed would still look acceptable next to Kaprizov's recent extension.

Yep.

I don't care to get inside his head but it seems pretty obvious that legacy seems to matter and winning a Cup with the team that drafted him is the only possible explanation for signing a deal like this.

He's giving them the minimum so he doesn't look like a complete heel when he does take off, very likely before the deal is done.

It is funny because fans think this guarantees 3 years.

If the team's results start going sideways with the flexibility he granted them? He'll probably force his way out before its over in that scenario.

They're basically under the gun now.
