Yeah, my god, incredible leadership.
What an inspiration.

This way when he does leave he can say he gave the Oilers every chance he could. This is as much a pragmatic legacy decision as anything.

Hopefully a lesson has been learned.

What about the times Diss conceded that if McDavid extends, it would be to play with his buddy Drai and the contract would be short?

This remains to be seen.
If they never get over the line, McDavid wastes the next 3 years and they then lose him for nothing anyway, we won't look back on this as a rough day for Flames fans.
It certainly delays the joy, but could be just fine or even better in the long run.

Taking the discount only works if you spend the savings on good players.
7 for Walman
9 for Nurse
10.5 for Bouchard
4 for Federic
This is not money well spent.

Only thing redeeming is that this means he's gone at the expiry.

Captain doing captain things. Sometimes leading requires sacrifice, Crosby did stuff like this for Pittsburgh. So yeah it might suck financially, but you have to respect a guy who takes a cut for his team.
Maybe they don’t take the next step, I sure hope they don’t, but McDavid’s actions speak to me about his character.

Lol okay buddy settle down they added....Jake Wallman with these cap savings. Even with this contract they will be hard pressed to bring this team.back next season. (Which is worse than last years team IMO)

For me I didn't think it was likely he walk at the end of this year. I thought a 3 year deal was likely. This puts a timeline on things. I'm happy about that. But he's taking less AAV than I figured. Not happy about that.
The Oilers will be leaving their contention window just as the Flames are hopefully building towards theirs. The key is, them not winning one between now and then.

I consider it to be good news for Flames fans. May I ask what you were expecting?

Not really. This means there's some finality that there's only three years left of the nightmare and they are in no way guaranteed anything.

Add Skinner raise or other average goalie that will make more and thats your Oilers the next 3 years.

Pretty much
When the best player in the world takes an $7.5m discount to try and win a championship...that's more than the individual salaries for 18 players on the oilers roster. If you're on that team, the expectation is that you're doing everything you can do to win that championship. If you're not on that team and are a UFA who wants a cup...you're also taking a discount to go there

By the end of this contract, McDavid will have $120 mil career earnings. His next contract will probably be something like 7 x 16. So by the time he retires he’ll have made over $230 mil playing hockey. That’s generational wealth for him, his kids, and his grandkids. In that context, an extra 8 or 10 mil doesn’t matter nearly as much as a ring.

Their chance of winning a cup is going to be ~8% this year, and 15%-20% each of the next two years. So the glass half full is that there's a ~2/3 chance they won't win a cup in any of the next three seasons.

Yeah because that has ever happened in Edmonton...McDavid took less last time and everyone else took top dollar lol
Guy might mean well but it was a ridiculously stupid decision and will age poorly IMO. I mean Wallman was a cap dump just over a year ago and now they are playing him 7M

Each additional time they come up short with the best weapon in the game is an embarrassing feat of ineptitude.
That you can't come up with a goalie better than Skinner in 10 years is hilarious. I hope they stick with him.

I really like how some of you just choose to reject realism and live in pocket dimensions of reality some times. I want to know how to divorce myself from facts and likely consequences/ outcomes so easily, it would be very helpful for my every day life.
There were 2 basic outcomes for McDavid this season: He doesn't re-sign and becomes a free agent (Good!), or he does (doesn't matter for how long) and we continue to have to deal with him and the impacts of Edmonton having him for X amount of years (Bad!).
It has now crystalized around the worse of the 2 options. It's not a positive outcome. That's ok, it's not like it's going to be the end of the world, no one's life is exploding as a consequence of this, but it's OK to acknowledge that this is not a good outcome for flames fans.
