Only thing redeeming is that this means he's gone at the expiry.

He is going to end his career with more money than what he and his family know what to do with. There are diminishing returns to making more millions. If you already have more millions than you need to live the lifestyle you want, why prioritize making more millions rather than something that will likely bring you more happiness and fulfillment in life (i.e., leading your team to a Stanley Cup; something he has probably dreamed about since he was a little boy)?
It actually surprises me that more superstars who have already made huge money in their career don't sacrifice their paycheck to increase their odds of winning a cup. I think that most don't do it because their egos get in the way: if so-and-so makes X, and I am better than X, then there is no way that I can take less money than X. This is actually a huge flex on McDavid's part: I am so much better than everyone else, and everyone else knows it, that I don't need to prove it with my salary!
And another thing: If we are counting the intangibles like leadership when evaluating a player, and not solely their on ice skills, then we should also count things like this. Taking less than you could get on the open marker has a bigger impact on probability of team success than if David was even a slightly better player on the ice.
Writing all of this praise for an Oiler's player made me throw up in my mouth a little.

McDavid and Matthews UFA in the same year, potentially an NBA style super team setup

Honestly to christ this team was one dumb ass play by a Kings D man from them being swept in round 1. They went on lucky runs 2 years in a row. They are not the 2nd best team in the league. And as you said they lost key players, got 1 year older, and have the karma of team of warm criminals. I'd be hardly shocked at all if they miss the playoffs. They are a garbage team that caught lightening in a bottle.

Maybe it's just wishful thinking on my part, but I feel like Oilers used all their hockey luck even getting to the finals 2 years in a row. I'm settling in for a few 1st round exits now :-).

Damn, everything about this sucks.
Credit to mcdavid for playing this out differently than expected and taking a massive discount.
Might be the first time in a negotiation where the club states a number and the player’s rebuttal was (far) less.

Yup! Best player and contract in the league, but they are worse right now then they were last season.

McDavid might end up in Toronto. He might play his entire career in Edmonton. He might go to another team after this contract. I have absolutely no idea. It's tough to predict what another human will do, which is why several posters suggested using less than absolute language, and not to name call people with opposing views. Hopefully a lesson has been learned.

Between his first 8 year extension (leaving $3M per year) and this contract (leaving $7M per year) on the table, guy gave Katz like a $38M discount. Katz probably built McDavid's house for free for him, and gave him a few condo units in his tower.

For those of you who thinks there's something shady going on under the table - "follow the money, this thing goes all the way to the top!"

I'm already so tired of watching the playoffs in anxiety until Edmonton is out.
Absolutely sucks that's going to happen for 3 more years.
Even if they don't get over the line; it's tiring to watch year after year.

Imagine having this much faith in that loser front office to leave money on the table. Hopefully giving the 50/50 scammers a cap break backfires as they bungle it with more bad moves and they fail to live up to their end.
The good thing is there are still no prospects of note (no the two they hype up aren't that), and every one is now into their decline years.

McDavids not gonna get the cup or the money now
Any money left on the table has gone to raises for average players who are now overpaid

I gotta say, I respect this so much. Takes a huge hometown discount to improve his chances to win it all and bring a Canadian city it's first cup since 1993. And the Olympics are coming up too.
This is what leadership looks like.
Mad respect. Pure class.

They are bad at the main job of defencemen, aside from Ekholm. Combine that with subpar goaltending and you get a typical Oilers team.

They're going to be cup favorites next year and the year after. And it's not going to be particularly close. I hope they don't win, but the facts are what they are.
