It was always hopium that he was going to pull a Tavares and leave IMO. With the luck Flames' fans have with the hockey gods, he'll probably pull these short term deals until he retires as an Oiler, cup or not.
I also think that with all the injuries in FLA, it was an easier sell to him that a 3peat over there was unlikely and he has a better chance of winning one with the Oilers.

I have no doubt that McDavid made things perfectly clear when signing the contract - if the team can't build a winner in the next three years, there won't be a number big enough to make him stay in 2028.

I think it’s probably shorter than that. It’s probably a case of them getting 2 years to get a cup… if not, the trade demand comes in summer 2027. Oilers look at it as a win-win. They get McDavid for two more attempts at a cup and then get to trade him for an absolute haul.

Will thy though? It would seem they need to keep him for that last run, and lose him for nothing.

Maybe I'm just optimistic but this could be the year it finally comes crumbling down for them. They've lost 2 of their top 6 playoff scorers, their best defensive Dman is getting pretty long in the tooth, the never addressed goaltending and their stars are a year older. Their team has far less depth upfront than it did last year and Walman on the back end is not going to compensate for that.

2 year deal is better than nothing for them but its not exactly a ringing endorsement. Looking at their long term contracts its pretty likely this is it.

You could have given me a thousand guesses and I wouldn’t have gotten it right.

A $2M overpay annually for Walman, a $3-4M underpay for McDavid from where we should have expected.
Respect to McDavid for taking less. There is nothing in life that you cannot do for $12.5M, so why squabble for the extra $2-3M?
3 more seasons of McDavid as an Oiler, this is their cup window. Scary times as a Flames fan.

Yeah instead of money to upgrade a goalie they quickly spent it on a mediocre dman

I'll be ok with them pounding Vegas in the regular season. I want that top 3 pick with the Vegas pick this year!
and FU Byfield!

I’m assuming they don’t win in either of the next two years and actually show regression. By that point, his camp tells them that he wants a trade. They won’t have a choice once it gets out he wants to be traded.

Walman turns 30 this season, and the extension kicks in next season. He will be 38 at the end of this contract. This will be a massive boat anchor.

Not the plan, no. But when your rival is staring down cup or bust for 3 more seasons it's never a good feeling, especially when our window is nowhere on the horizon.
