It is crazy that he left probably 16 million on the table for those two years, stupid for him, especially to live in one of the biggest dumps in the NHL, and then his union pals have to be livid

I hope the NHL does a thorough investigation as this doesn't pass the smell test.

How many times does this organization get to circumvent the cap? If I'm the GM of a contending team I'm livid.

GMs are probably happy that this counteracts the Kaprizov deal somewhat. Turns both into outliers.

It isn't cap circumvention, but you know the union isn't happy then the market was reset and he signed significantly below that. Even his 12.5M would have been below market value a few years ago.

I think players respect him, but I don't think they like McD.
Based on nothing other than televised Team Canada bench/dressing room vibes. Everyone seemed to be tight, and then he was off to the side scowling.
So yeah, I am sure the union will be justifiably pissed. Best player in the world taking a discount to play in EDM.

The PA is going to be pissed at this one, and I imagine some of his fellow players will as well. Teams will use this as ammunition - and it paints a fascinating counter against the Kaprizov deal. He's the best player in the game and will be making $12.5M, why should X player make more than the best player.
I can't blame him. I imagine, he cares deeply about his legacy and a big part of that is bringing a championship to the team that drafted him. And he knows if he asks for too much, that will prevent that. So he's created a 3 year window for that to happen, that preserves the opportunity for a massive pay day, with a different team, at the end of the contract.
It's kinda what I expected, though I would have thought the AAV would have been 14-15M.

I don't think this has any bearing on the Kaprizov deal as that's the new market.
