Booming World Cup ticket prices outstrip everything except the Super Bowl
From the Athletic
Quote:
Initial prices for tickets to the 2026 men’s World Cup blew away all projections and points of comparison except one: the NFL’s Super Bowl.
The prices were far beyond what North American soccer officials proposed during their successful bid for the 2026 tournament. Back in 2018, they estimated that group-stage tickets could range from $21 to $323, and tickets to the World Cup final could range from $128 to $1,550. Instead, the cheapest ticket to the final is $2,030, with most upper-deck tickets to the showpiece sold for $2,790 or $4,210; lower-level and most second-level tickets for the final are $6,730.
|
Welp, the hope that ticket prices for the tournament would mirror those of previous WCs is officially out the window. Guess we probably shoulda known this would happen. They probably figure that diaspora communities in the States will pay any amount to see their team play. Are they really gonna sell out Tunisia vs New Zealand at AT&T or Metlife at $500+ a pop?

Am I the only one who would have second thoughts of even buying tickets to The World Cup or Los Angeles Olympics due to safety concerns alone? I originally planned to go down for the tournament, but all that has changed because of the election. I'm okay to wait four years and fly to Portugal or Spain.

We are trying to decide as well. We received the pre-sale rights to try. We might even skip the games and just go to the fifa party areas and try a game in Mexico.

Zero chance I’ll go to the US for a game. I’ll never spend another recreational dime there regardless of the situation.

If I won a trip including game tickets in the U.S., I’d sell them abd donate the money to a charity. Maybe kids’ cancer as a FU to the crime family.

Don’t forget about your donation to FIFA.
As per the athletic:
Quote:
FIFA will charge both sellers and buyers a 15 per cent fee on its official 2026 World Cup ticket resale platform, which launched on Thursday and almost immediately had some tickets listed for tens of thousands of dollars.

Hmm, not sure I agree. If I got the chance to buy tickets, I would travel to ANY host city.
The only thing that makes me hesitant now are the prices. FIFA saw how easily NFL, NHL, NBA etc extort fans for money and decided they would follow suit. We kinda did this to ourselves.
In Europe, if a club raises prices, fans protest and burn down the clubhouse.

I'm kind of torn. First of all, personally, I'm not keen on going to the US. But even putting that aside, I initially thought that I would go somewhere like Seattle or KC, and just get tickets to some pool matches and enjoy the atmosphere. Now, I'm looking at the prices and to see two countries play that I don't care about is going to cost a fortune, so maybe staying home and going to the pub is a better route anyway?

It may well be. I'm going to be looking at games I want to see and hitting up fan zones.

My strategy failed miserably. Looks like Vancouver, Seattle Dallas for me so far. Mexico sold out too quickly

It's all gambling right now without any of the matchups being set. But there will be a lot of very undesirable matchups once the draw is made, and ticket prices should plunge accordingly. Club World Cup tickets got down to under $10 a match close to match day.

Is it like a work thing?
My plan is to find a fun game in Mexico and do literally that, GTD. Thats what I did with Paris and it worked out great.

No luck for me on the Visa presale either.
I do live right by one of the practice fields being setup for the Cup, so hopefully can see something over there at least if I don't get anything.
