Criticizing Parekh is 100% fair and justified if he has a bad game or few games.
What isn't fair is throwing out blanket statements like "he's never going to be Quinn Hughes" or "he's too slow/game is too fast for him" after he's played 1 NHL regular season game and a handful of preseason games. It's stupid and people need to step back from the ledge.
Everyone was bad last night, it wasn't just Zayne. And to compound things, he was playing on his off side which is an extra challenge for him that people seem to be forgetting about.
The team will be fine. Parekh will be fine. He does not have a long way to go IMO and these types of comments are going to look silly in a few weeks.

We get bent out of shape over losing guys like Vladar, Kuzy, Solo... they are replacement level. It sucks when we lose someone we've invested interest (and forum text) into, but there are always more of those guys to be found.

If you are expecting big things from Parekh in just a few weeks, your expectations are likely too high.
Sure he's entitled to a bad game. No big deal. But it likley shows he's not ready to take the NHL by storm.
There is a reason why such a gifted offensive dman fell to #9. He just may have a lot to learn defensively to play big minutes in the NHL.
Or maybe not?
We'll find out how far he has to go in the next 3 months or so. He's not likely to be a star in 2 weeks.
Yes, people need to step back from the ledge. But people also need to understand there is a ledge.

I mean, I don't believe that there was anywhere in my post where I alluded to expecting big things from him right off the bat or that he's going to be a star in 2 weeks? But if that wasn't clear, then my apologies.
All I'm arguing against is the narrative from some posters that all-of-a-sudden because Zayne has one bad game - in a game where the entire team was bad - that we should be re-considering if he can hack it in the NHL this season. Or re-evaluating his entire potential based on that one game. It's dumb and doesn't contribute to discussion.
I get that hockey is an emotionally charged game and people can get very worked up by it (I do too) but... use your brains people before making comments like those. That's all I'm saying.
Zayne's not going anywhere and he will do just fine in the NHL this season. Yes, there's going to be a lot of on-the-job learning for him, especially in the defensive zone. 100% agree. But let's just hold off on the negative prognostications off the back of one game.

My impression of Parekh right now is that he has a skillset like nobody else in the organization. Great passer. Great vision. Good shot from the point. Moves the puck well. Helps generate offense. Great at keeping possession in the offensive zone.
Concerning point is he is still on the small side and gets over powered.
Tricky part will be figuring out how to utilize him to take advantage of his strengths and not get bitten by his weakness.
But once again. No one like him in terms of generating offense from the back end. I’ll be interested to see how it all plays out

Pre season. backup goalies & some young guys. Still, absolutely no excuse for such a pathetic performance. Shameful!

The only time Hubey or Rasmus should ever see PP time is if 3/4 of the team is ejected for bench clearing brawls and they are part of the PP5 unit.

Guaranteed the Flames don't show up on Saturday.

Wait until if game 1 goes poorly.
I think we play game 2 right away so at least there will be less stewing/panick. But its always a lively couple of days.
But if they both go sideways, ho boy.

To counter this point.
Parekh - 6'0 @ 185lbs listed
But he came in bigger at camp this year (12lbs of muscle)
He's bigger than the following "elite" offensive defenseman today (2025 point totals)
Hughes - 5'10 - 181
Hutson - 5'10 - 165
Makar - 5'11 - 187
Fox - 5'11 - 181
The ones that are bigger - some not by much at all
Morrissey - 6'0 - 194
Sanderson - 6'2 - 185
Werenski - 6'2 - 214
Dahlin - 6'3 - 203
Bouchard - 6'3 - 192
Hedman - 6'6 - 245
Essentially I don't think he's undersized, I think he's underexperienced for sure but that doesn't mean he's not a fit or out of his league. He needs to play, he needs protected minutes and he needs to be put in situations that are advantageous to his skill set (Powerplay)
Quinn Hughes had Tanev to shelter him his rookie season.
Makar had Ryan Graves
Fox had Ryan Lindgren
Essentially we need Parekh to have a better partner than Jake Bean or Brayden Pachal. Bahl would be the perfect fit in my opinion.
He's played 1 meaningless NHL game last year where he looked good.
He's played 2 pre-season games this year.
I think he's ready for the NHL.

Why would anyone be shocked the team was not ready to start? This is an ongoing problem carried over from last season with Huska. Nothing has changed.

Huh?
Team that exceeded the expectations more than any other team was not ready to start and it's an ongoing problem with the coach not getting them ready to start?

Truculent!

When Parekh succeeds in the D zone, its when he is using his agility and speed and smarts to get to and move the puck quickly.
He has gotten into trouble any time he has had to grind the wall or hasn't made the attempt to break up the zone entry on the rush or break the cycle with his stick and body placement. He get's overpowered easily in this position. Something the Makar's, Hughes and Hutsons make sure they have prevented from occuring. Because they lose those battles too.
If he can learn this quickly, he will be ok. He isn't among his teenager peers anymore. the faster he learns these guys all have old man strength, the better.

I truly believe that he made our team look way better than it actually is. We have a lot of aging and declining vets in the lineup. Without Wolf, we are a lottery team.
|
He is part of the team though...how are the Oilers without McDavid?
Also, Vladar was .500 with an .898 save % so they did do some good things. Lets not pretent last night was like an average game last season

I don't really care about +/- when our goalies are letting in muffins from the side boards all night.
It's also one preseason game in which almost all of the vets were absolutely brutal. I'm not too surprised with the results though, because last year Wolf completely hid how bad the roster was talent wise by stealing so many games. And he likely will have to continue that this year.
|
If you are trying desperately to make a team in a bottom 6 role zero hits doesnt look good in an 8-1 loss.
Kerins has had 2 tough ones IMO...I think he may be sent down.
