You can? Are the Panthers shopping them? I certainly don't see them showing up as a pending UFA and if you think Barkov signs that contract in today's NHL you are delusional. Second of all Minneapolis is not Florida or a defending Stanley Cup champion and players aren't taking discounts to play there. It's kind of silly to make these types of comparisons quite frankly. Kaprizov is the highest paid NHL player for the same reason Dak Prescott is the highest paid NFL player. It's all about timing and worth to the team they play on. Neither player is top 5 in their respective leagues but they are both irreplaceable for their respective teams so those teams either pay them market value at that time or they walk and your team gets much worse and people in the building start getting fired. Make no mistake, if the Wild don't get this deal done with Kaprizov, there would be another team ready to pay him this much money and the Wild likely go into a tailspin and people in the organization start getting fired. It's really not that difficult to understand why contracts like this happen.

Define a ton? They've got their important players locked up. Ideally you want to spend as little as possible but spend it at the top of your line up

Huge cap escalation does this and Kaprizov is the 1st to sign the big deal for money under the new cap. Marner took $5M less and it is going to make things a bit harder for Minnesota now.
But from their prospective they have 5 players signed for 4 years or longer.
Faber
Eriksson Ek
Kaprizov
Boldy
Middelton
Combined AAV is $42.1M and averages out to be $8.42 per year(starting next year). Considering the quality of players, that is still good and Kap's contract does not kick in until next year. Add Rossi and 2 potential rookie of the year players and a bunch of other quality prospects they are going to be good keeping Kap.
If they can lock up Gustavsson, I can see them being a contender for the next 4 years with this contract.

I wonder if Tkachuk would've stayed if we gave him $17m. Roughly the same level of player.

Mitch Marner's spent his whole career with Auston Matthew, William Nylander and John Tavares. Matthews has 400 goals in 600 games before he turned 28, Nylander has had three straight forty goal seasons. Marner is good but he's never been the best player there. Marner's gotten more assists off the back of those guys than reverse.
Kapriov is undeniably the man on his team, he plays with some good quality players now but his right wing has been an aging vet in Zuccarello. There's a reason for the gap in pay.

They have their entire core locked up fir the next 4 years or so. They only have bit players to sign next season and 21 million in cap space to do it. I don't see a pinch for them any time soon.

Kaprizov has some injury concerns but if he's healthy he's one of the top players in the game. It might be a bit more than you'd hope but you can't easily replace players like that. When you're in a market like Minnesota and you're in a decent competitive window, you're likely better off paying a little extra than trying to find ways to scramble and fill that hole. Free agency is very risky. Trade isn't great because you lose assets to gain assets. I think this is the right move for them even if it's a million or two more than you'd hope for.

I'm not even sure he has injury concerns. He's missed 65 games in his career, 41 of which were last season. That's a handful of games missed the prior four seasons for what could be any number of reasons.

Well the cap will keep going up and 17M will be the going rate for a late thirties winger so the contract won't even be a big deal, am I doing it right?

He missed 15 games with injury in 22-23 and 41 last year. Turns 30 in first year of this contract. So 2 pretty significant injuries in the last 3 seasons. Its a factor...17M is a lot of money you cant LTIR

He has missed 22% of all the Wild's games since he came into the league.
So essentially 1/5 games

He's missed 65 of 384 games (his first season was cut short by COVID), which is 17%, not 22%. I'm not even sure where you got 22% from.

Not horrible but, those are in his 20s. Guy turns 30 in year one of the contract and has had 2 significant injuries in the last 3 seasons including a MAJOR one last year. To say its not a concern at all is pretty silly.
Its the absolute top end contract on price and term...he will need to be healthy and as good as he has ever been to be fair value. It might work out but could easily go sideways IMO.

The kicker with this contract is giving him a full on NMC for the whole duration. I know that is most likely a "must" when handing out the most lucrative contract in NHL history, but I would have at least asked for some modified 3-5 team flexibility towards the last 1-3 years of that contract.

He wrote that contract for himself. The Wild just put their letterhead on it.
It's the same as Mcavi will be with Toronto. "Here's what I'm getting."

67, 75, 41 in his last 3 seasons isn't great. Is it a trend or just some bad luck? I'm not sure. I know I'd be a bit nervous drafting him in fantasy hockey for whatever that is worth.
