I doubt it. Player compensation is capped. The more the stars are paid the less for others. What motivation dos the PA have to shoot up salaries and increase escrow?

Not that he's signing there anyways...

Staring down 32 year old Dysaddle and McDavid earning a combined $34M AAV for forever would be just delicious with a support cast clearly not able to help the pair fend off father time. Even if those two's regression looks like 80 points, it's just nowhere near enough to justify that cap hit let alone potentially carry a group of bums to the finals.
It won't happen though. McDavid rightfully won't want to commit to that tire fire beyond 2-3 more seasons and nix any chance he has at winning a title as he slows down. This season is quite realistically Edmonton's last chance at "something special" up north.

So how many points does a player need to make 17M a good contract even? I cant imagine this ages well

If he stays in Canada, I like Montreal's chances better.
They are much better run. They have tons of assets and are just starting to enter their contention window.
What could GNBT possibly offer EDM? It would have to be a Gilmour-level fleecing of an AB team for that to happen.
On second thought; maybe this is one last favour that GMBT could do for us. If he fleeced the Oilers and then delivered McD his cup that could fuel us for a decade.
But it would suck to hear the English Canadian media go on and on about the Leafs. At least the Habs media write/speak French that less of us understand.
First choice for me is he goes to the USA and the Flames are the next CDN team to win the Cup.

There is zero chance McDavid ever plays a game for the Habs. That I can guarantee.

Likely the opposite. This contract will age well.
Jarome Iginla made 17.95% of the salary cap in 2005/2006.
Kaprizov’s contract will be worth 16.35% of the cap in 2026/2027, and is projected to be 14.98% of the cap in 2027/2028.
I get the shock value of the dollar figure, but % is the key factor to keep in mind as a fan.
The good news? $10.5M 50 point players become closer to fair value every year that goes by with the current cap escalation.

They're definitely not built around plucky role players. You need a star player to win, that's the bottom line. It's much easier to fill depth down the line up than find a star franchise winger. This new contract is 16% of the cap, 15% the next two years. The cap keeps going up. Lock down star players, don't nickle and dime them so you can pay Troy Brouwer or Mikeal Frolik.

He's missed 65 games in the last 5 years, 41 last year. 24 going in his 1st 4 seasons.
His 1st year was a shorten season and missed 1 game.
This deal is too much, but there will be more like this one soon

Guy has played one full NHL season and he is 29 this year...jury is certainly still out. I mean they had to do it but this is the absolute most they could have possibly paid.

If I could have prime Iggy, or Kaptizov, I take Iggy every time. For many reasons. Kaprizov will not stick up for team mates, or fight guys like Ben or Hatcher when needed. Iggy was a leader.
I think Minnesota will do ok with this contract but I think it’s too much.

Hence the 1.6% less in salary?
Iginla in 2026/2027: $18.668M
Kaprizov: $17M
I'm not saying they're equal players, but it illustrates the point.
and hey, Huberdeau is now only 10.10% of the salary cap in 2026/2027!
There's zero doubt that MIN paid a premium to keep Kaprizov, I just don't think it's all THAT insane.
What'll have a good amount of sticker shock is when Calgary signs Makar to his 6-year contract in 2027/2028 and it comes in at like $22.7M AAV (20% is still the max I think?).

It will age better than Parise contract. I just didn't think Kap would ever be highest paid player. Minny was in a tough position. And he and his agent definitely took full advantage of the situation

Who's crapping on that contract? It's already looking like a bargain. Nobody will ever call Pissy the sharpest tool in the shed as he's going to play the majority of his career underpaid vs his peers.

I have been saying for a few months that Huberdeau is going to be tradeable soon. His contract will be ok by summer of 2027

Odds of them making the final again have to be zero.
But their Kryptonite Florida probably won’t be there either.
