They had 98 points last season...it isn't the old days when fogging a mirror was all it took to make the playoffs. Two major injuries won't be easy to deal with, they won't panic yet but big loss.

They added Jones at the deadline and Marchand came back when the playoffs started. Also they were without Tkachuk since the four nations until the playoffs and still made it as a third seed, while resting guys. They'll be fine. The real question is whether Barkov will be back for the playoffs.

Yeah, this will be a tougher one to overcome. Barkov to me sets the tone for that entire team in how they play. He's about as unselfish as it gets in the league. The Panthers are deep but I don't think they have anyone who they can elevate into the role that Barkov plays and not miss something. I can't imagine the reaction on this board if the Panthers did end up with like the 11th pick the year after the Flames had their pick and it was 32nd.

Not sure how anyone can disregard this and think they will be ok. Barkov is one of the best players in the league. Short term, maybe they could survive. The entire season, good luck.

Add Tkachuk, no chance they survive this, and they do not get cap relief to do anything.

Add on, any of Bennett, Ekblad, Forsling, Jones or Reinhart get hurt, they could miss the playoffs by a fair amount. Couple of those guys are a lock to miss a few games.

Chicago has their unprotected 1st. They are going to be stacked because of this.

The truth is somewhere in the middle. It's a huge blow to them, it will hurt, but they are not doomed. You look at that roster without Barkov, that's still a good team. As long as they make the playoffs, they'll have a shot.

Sorry, are you implying that the back to back defending champs are going to be so low in the standings that Chicago would get a high draft pick?

It sucks that they are missing Barkov for that long, but this is still a very, very good and deep roster. Barkov has missed plenty of games over the years and they've been able to sustain success without him. Chicago will get a pick somewhere in the mid to late 20's.

Plus Lundell is coming to his own. He's just turning 24. I wouldn't be surprised to see him go PPG if he takes Barkov's spot on the PP1.

Dang, that's just bad news for the league and hockey fans in general.

The one I'm worried about is Ekblad. They've lost Barkov before, but survived... they've lost Ekblad before and also survived... but that two months they were missing both Barkov and Ekblad (during Chucky's first season there) the Panthers were barely above 0.400.

I suppose now that Jones is on the team, it might be more about not losing Forsling... but basically as long as their D stays healthy they should be fine.

Third seed yes, 2 more points than the Flames though...bubble of the east last year wasnt very good but it might better this year. I think its certainly possible they could lose 2 or 3 more games and be in a race this time. Star goalie is no spring chicken either, there are a lot of players on that roster that have played a lot of hockey and are not young.

Any chance Montreal or Ottawa can win the division now? I still think the Panthers, Leafs, and Lightning make the playoffs, but due to injuries, age, and roster moves that division feels wide open today. Although part of me wonders if the Habs regress a bit, expectations for them might be too high. The Sens might end up taking it.

I believe Marchand and Crosby are good friends. I could actually see this happening. The Panthers have become the Miami Heat of hockey. F U Miami.

It won't be high but could very well be higher than they were expecting...you guys act like a cup champ has never missed the playoffs the following year before. It has happened quite a bit.

They couldn't have cared less about the regular season last year and it showed. It was slow burn for them. Their core is around 28-30 year olds, I wouldn't call that old and Bob has been extremely healthy his entire career plus it's his contract year.

Now, if they get additional injuries to key guys then yes, it's going to get tough. But as of now, even down their 1C and 1W, I'm not worried about the regular season at all.

worry about what you like, they are the 4th oldest team in the NHL, have a 37 year old starting goalie, and have made 3 finals runs. Not saying they won't make it but this also wont be an easy season for them IMO.

I just bet the under on 101 points. They likely make it with high 90s again IMO but that is cutting it kinda tight it wouldn't take much for it to go off the rails.

It will now be up to the Flames to stop the Oilers this year.

don't know about 100 but he would likely be PPG on most teams IMO
