Senior Tories asked to donate $1,000: report

Senior political staff in the Harper government say they are "not impressed" with a request from the Prime Minister's Office to donate $1,000 to the Conservative party, according to a report.

While the donations are not an order, the official told the newspaper that many government workers are concerned they may lose their jobs if they don't fork over.
The official told The Globe that three or four executives in each minister's office are targeted for the contributions. These executives include senior political staff such as chiefs of staff, communications directors, senior policy advisers and directors of parliamentary affairs.

I thought that the conservatives had a huge war-chest built up and they were the one party financially prepared for an election. This makes one wonder how strapped for cash they are?

How does this request make them "strapped"?
You can never have too much money when running an election.

No, that is true, you can never have too much money to run a campaign. It just seems like a somewhat desperate measure considering the bad press it will get. If they have as much as people seem to think then it makes me wonder why they would do it, that's all.

Well the guys that are being targeted are, in general, guys that have benefitted from the Tories being the governing party.
Sounds like they are being asked to give something back...really not a big deal and not sure how "bad press" will come of it.

I think you are reading way too much into this. It could be way worse... like the Liberal fundraising plight.

The Liberals are a shattered party, the only support they have (as far as I'm concerned) are people that hate the Conservatives but have no faith in the alternatives (Green/NDP/etc.) which is still about 25-35% of the country.. If you like revelling in their misfortune, why not start a thread with the articles you presented? I don't see a problem with RH starting this thread or you starting one about the Libs. Go nuts.

Not sure who "they" are.
One guy said "many" thought it may affect their jobs...yet no names and no sources to corroborate.
In fact it is being denied emphatically in the story as well....so who knows?
I have no problem with it if it is true. As noted...

People can't be that offended that the reason they make this much money is asking for a couple days wages to be reimbursed for the good of the party.
This is a non-issue unless threats of loss of livlihood are proven IMO.

It just sounds a little like those employees are "buying" their positions. Pay another 25 cents to continue this phonecall or pay $1000 to continue this job.
Its probably nothing, and it would be stupid to run you business that way, but I can see how it may be interpreted that way.

Never the less...it is wrong and only furthers the notion that politicians are not to be trusted. If this is infact the case....very shameful on the conservatives behalf.
