That's still like double the cost it used to be. IMO the issue I have with instant black coffee is that it's not very tasty.

I don't mind instant for coffee beverages, but I don't really like it for black coffee.

Kicking Horse is actually on sale right now at Superstore. The 454g bags are on for $14, limit of 4 per customer. They haven't been that cheap for quite a while, and the "regular" price is a completely bonkers $24.99. Ends tomorrow, if they have any left.

I remember buying the Kicking Horse on Amazon, and occasionally on sale at Superstore, for about $11 or $12 for 454g.

The President's Choice 907g tubs are actually pretty decent. You can get a few different varieties and roasts, whole bean or ground. I like that they come in recyclable cardboard tubs, and currently go for $22.99. Which is like $11.50 for 454g - pretty good, all things considered. I used to stock up on those tubs for about $15/907g, but those days are also long gone.

Ya its getting insane for sure. I like the Lavazza Creme E Aroma and its gone from 20$ per kg in 2024 to 28$/kg this year. I bought a super automatic Philips 3200 and one of the draws was the cost savings per cup moving from a Keurig. Still pretty big savings since we drink a ton of coffee (Keurig 100$/mo, Philips 28$/mo) but the extra 40% cost sure adds up.

Of course the Philips also tastes 10000000000x better than K cups.

$20 for 454g is around 35-40 servings if you're doing 12-15g per cup, it's around $0.60. Get a discount and per serving $15 for 454g brings it down to around $0.40 per cup.

Comparatively, $2 cup of Timmies, you're entering the realm of "very expensive beans". ie: assume $50 for 250g, assume 15-20 servings at the 12-15g rate and it's like $2.50 - $3.25 per cup.

When I was a kid, to reduce video games, my parents only let my brother and I play our game boy if we bought our own batteries. Going to the store if ask the batteries were dead would waste an hour or more of the precious time to play games.

Off topic but a huge portion of people these day's just don't know how to unit cost or try and compare things apples to apples from a cost perspective. It's mind boggling and very expensive for consumers.

There are pricing anomalies out there and I have always been able to spot them a lot of times. Sometimes you need to actually spend more money as the cost per use/km/day or longevity goes more in your favor .
I always use the basic example of laundry and dishwasher detergent as there is really only 2 kinds. Powder and liquid. All the variations and innovations with pods etc is to get a much higher unit cost from consumers, a lot of times shockingly higher. Literally paying substantially more for the exact same product for the rest of your life, why?

We are all selectively spend heavy and thrifty in our own ways but there has to be some element of control or logic.

Ha, I used to use Multiplan (Microsoft's spreadsheet program before Excel) on my C64 to do these sorts of calculations.

I don't drink coffee at all at home, but in Vietnam it's a different story. Cà Phê Sữa Đá (iced coffee with condensed milk) is literal crack and I can never have enough

Absolutely love it. Fantastic freshly ground cup of coffee at the push of a button and the ability to make fancy drinks is a huge money/calorie saver. My wife and her friends are big Starbucks vanilla latte fans, but I can make one in a couple of minutes and for half the calories.

Highly recommend and since we've had it, 3 of our couple friends have picked one up and moved from K-cups as it pays for itself in (I got it on prime days for 600$) ~6 months with the price difference in beans vs pods. My only regret is I got the one that makes Americanos instead of ice coffees, not sure if you still have to choose one only (the higher models have both) but I drink way more iced coffees than americanos so I really bunged that up.

Also, espresso martinis.
