However, this is going to get better and better to follow the longer it drags out. Please let it drag right past the deadline!

It is 100% Katz, will definitely be Kwahi side deals involved without a doubt. (ie. long term consultant, ownership deals, lucrative endorsement deal with Katz Group etc.)

If McDavid were smart, he would tell the oilers he will resign at the end of the season, in hopes they don't trade him at deadline. Then he gets to pick which team to sign with and that team just has to clear cap space without giving up assets. Might have to give up a couple picks to trade bad contracts but that's it.
Dick move but it couldn't happen to a more deserving organization.

Yeah it's clearly not about money as Katz would pay his ask without blinking and surely be offering $$$ under the table deals.

I enjoyed this one

He has a full NTC so he obviously controls his fate. Assume then that, if he’s going to be traded, he would only accept a trade to teams he considers legit contenders. That likely narrows the list down to maybe 5-6 teams. Of those teams, how many can fit him under the cap? Have to assume the oilers retain salary to maximize the number of teams they could trade him to. What does he bring back in trade? Has to be a haul even in those circumstances of limited options because the oilers would rather not trade him at all than trade him for a poor return - simply because of the optics of getting crushed on a trade for McDavid.
Example teams he might consider true contenders by the TDL (hard to guess though):
Florida
Vegas
Tampa
Colorado
Toronto
Carolina
Dallas
What would teams like that trade to acquire McDavid for a playoff run? Would they have enough?
|
He's worth more at the deadline than next offseason.
Next offseason all you have is sign and trade - that gets you nothing but a token return.
Fun!

How far out do the Oilers have to be at the deadline to decide they’re trading him? Gotta be more than 6 I think. They’ll be compelled to chase a bubble spot to see if they can make a run. Not hard to imagine a scenario where they narrowly miss and he walks.

Even if he didn't want to leave before this, this will push him more out the door. Its going to be a distraction and annoyance to him all year.

If that did happen, Oiler fans would give Philadelphia fans booing lessons.

The booing would just be one continuous tone that runs all year and you can start hearing it the moment you get north of Red Deer.

McDavid could easily say that he is so committed to bringing a cup to Edmonton, that he won't accept a trade. After the playoffs, he signs with his favourite team.

McDavid doesn't have to hope. He has a no-trade clause. He can decide he doesn't want to be traded.

If they approached him and said we'd like to trade you and would you be willing to waive, he'd accept before they even finished the sentence.

The singular act of agreeing to waive his NTC, were it to be made public, would confirm his enmity towards the Oilers fanbase, thereby ensuring his departure. Persona non-grata.

I can imagine McDavid giving the Oilers one or two more years. If they don't win it in the next two, he's gone. Especially if they show signs of regression, which is inevitable IMO this year. That's 12 years of his career given to an organization that has done nothing but fumbled around and failed.

If I’m McDavid, there’s no way I am sticking with a team that hasn’t upgraded the goaltending the entire time I’ve been there. Or letting go two very promising players for nothing. That’s a team that doesn’t think ahead and just overusing McD and LD’s services and hoping to throw **** on the wall for everything else.
