Would you rather have Bichsel or Byram? I’m leaning Bichsel

Byram for me. I see Bichsel as a Zadorov. Great hits, very mobile for a big guy, and decent defensively in a limited role so far. Byram is the much more proven commodity, with a better transition game and a lot more offense, even though I question some of his decision making defensively.

If we didn’t have Zayne, mews, bruz, and Morin in the system I’d agree with you, but would counter and say that Bichsel is more what we need at the moment.

The main reason is that their Cs aren't world beaters defensively, and when you combine that with a relatively weak D core, and an inexperienced #1G for the Sharks, then you get one of the worst GAs in the league. At the same time the Ducks had the 3rd worst offense last year, meanwhile the Sharks had the worst offense, so they would both need their forwards to take a huge step this year.
I am not so sure you can be certain in evaluating their forward's defensive prowess based on the last few years. The Sharks have good talent up front but they had garbage D and terrible goaltending. Even if the forwards played their defensive positions perfectly, the puck was going into their net.

This year they have three big assets ready to graduate.
Askarov - The Sharks' version of Wolf
Dickinson - Their version of Parekh (OHL Dman of the year)
Mukhamadullin - Another 1st round pick Dman (from the Devils in the Meier trade)

Throw in Orlov, Klingberg, and Leddy and you have some vets that can help make that D group suck less. If they add Andersson then that is very close to replacing the entire D group from last year and one could argue they would be at least "NHL calibre". But they cannot take that step with Liljegren or Klingberg as their #1RD.

If the young D play well enough that they can trade Ferraro for a middle 6 winger then that might help too, but really they could just promote one or two of Misa, Musty, Bystedt, Graf, Lund, Chernyshov, Halttunen

With a somewhat decent D group in front of him, Askarov has a chance to come in as hot as Wolf did last year. It could cause some chaos in the division and if it lowers VGK in the standings then that is good for us.

Pretty sure I recall seeing a wolf howling gif recently. All hail to the gif for making this possible.

The key part of the quote is actually the part that was cut off

"who pointed out it wouldn’t be smart for him to sign a deal now, given his struggles last season."

It’s not even possible for Rasmus to “handcuff” Conroy. He can sign with who he wants, and he doesn’t need to sign where he doesn’t want. His list can be as short as he likes, and that isn’t “handcuffing” the Flames. It’s the reality, there is no other option so how is it “handcuffing”? This isn’t unique to Rasmus, and plays out every year with top free agents.

So it's not that he won't handcuff us to one team, but he just won't sign in general right now?

Not sure if that makes it better or worse..

Feels like this one might go down to the deadline, as he'll need to runway for a bounce back to get the deal he wants.

If the Flamea are in a similar position as last year, and he's a huge part of it, will they have the guts to trade him though.

One is trying to use the extension as a way to pick one team.

The other is not feeling it's in his best interest to sign anywhere because he had a bad season.

I see them very differently.

One is manufacturing leverage. The other a personal risk/reward choice that everyone is allowed to make.

Yeah in terms of his intent forsure.
I dont think he's wrong with how he's handling it. Hes allowed to sign where he wants.

In terms of impact on the Flames, this might force us to sell him as a pure rental and push this thing to the deadline.

The new retention rules, which I only loosely understand, may create another leverage point, 75 days out from the TDL.

I think it's better. If he's only signing with one team, that team has all the leverage. You get a lower 'max return' ceiling, so any teams that would trade for him as a rental this year likely offers below that.

If there's 25 teams now that can get one year of him, it's a more balanced/competitive market place.
