This COULD end up being the worst case scenario if:
- McDavid wants to see if they can win this year, and how sustainable that is going forward
- As the season progresses, as long as they are in a playoff spot, they can't trade him
- Which increases the risk that he walks for nothing. For instance, they make the playoffs, lose in the first round, and then that's enough for him to say "it ain't gonna happen here".

Having McDavid walk for nothing would be a disaster.

If he doesn’t resign, my guess is he walks for nothing. He has a no trade clause, and being traded (especially if it’s a sign and trade) will not help his chances to win with a new team as they’ll be gutted by the assets required to acquire him. From a pure strategic perspective he should play out his contract, enter free agency and sign with the team he feels is most likely to win a cup.

Yes. The new team will likely need to clear some cap space to fit him in, but at least they can trade players and acquire assets in return to improve their chances to win and lengthen their win window.

Funny, I don't recall anyone suggesting that Tkachuk should have employed that strategy.

Although you are certainly correct.

I’m not at all up to speed on their prospect pool but man the bright lights of New York. There’s nothing like it.

And as I’ve always said my absolute dream final would be Flames v NYR. Can you imagine walking through the streets of Midtown during the finals sporting your Flames jersey?
Think of it this way. Imagine you grew up a huge fan of a team. All throughout your childhood while crafting your game you picture bringing the SC back to that team and as you enter your pro career that team has still not managed to win. They have not won in over 55 years. That team just also happens to be the biggest market in that sport. After giving 11 years to a franchise you were never thrilled to be with in the first place you now have a chance to chase your dream? What do you do? The only fly in the ointment is you were hoping to win one championship with a teammate who became a best friend. After coming close twice you can still take one more kick at the can there but after that the outlook for your current team is bleak as they have enptied the cupboards to try and win how. What do you do?

You have taken a lot of heat on this point, undeservedly. If McDavid himself told me that there is no way he's signing an extension, he's going to free agency, and signing in Toronto then I would still be cautious because he could change his mind, a year is a long time away, etc. to the point that I'd like be cautious about how I posted that info on here. You, nope, no fear. I admire that and you sticking to your guns. If he enters the season saying that he will talk contract at then end of the year, then I'm totally here for the meltdown in Edmonton.

McDavid has to be traded, at the deadline, with the Oilers still in playoffs contention for Maximum Meltdown viewing enjoyment.

Nonono, its much better if he strings them along past the deadline only to decide to walk because Bowman and co cant give him a convincing blueprint for how they'll stay competitive because they've already emptied the cupboards of trade chips on bad or mediocre trades over the last 5 years.

We want maximum loss that falls entirely on the team's incompetence. This is the coiler way.

I’d rather the Oilers lose him for nothing. The package they would receive for McDavid should be pretty substantial. I’d like to see them suffer with their AHL roster, no picks, and bare cupboards. They are due for a decade or two of darkness.

I can just see Stauffer red-faced, sweating himself into a near heart-attack, angrily typing that 'article' on his computer.
I still think McDiver is going to sign a 2-3 year 'show me' deal with the grease pigs (they have to show him, not the other way around). All this speculation is just slow hockey off season news days.
I'm not worried as they aren't going to be any better. As much as I hate Kane and Perry's scumbag guts they were good for the oilers. This arrogant little rookie Howard they signed is going to replace that? I'd start to worry a bit more if they got an actual goalie, or a defenseman.

Leon ain’t staying sans Connor.

The remaining roster isn’t good enough to be competitive, and they need a whole rebuild cycle that will outlast Leon’s best years.

It will be framed as mutually agreeable, but he’s out of there within 2 years of Connor’s potential exit without question.

Oilers are not amazing this year exposing the long term issues. Mcdavid walks, Drai demands a trade (and makes it very difficult for them to get significant value), then they sign some third tier player to an insane contract to show the fans ‘look we can still attract top talent’.

Let’s do it!

That was as lot of words to say: Edmonton is no good. Also, Toronto is no good.

If McDavid leaves they will be bottom third of the league for sure. They are basically losing half of their offence and you would quickly see how ordinary some players are without Mavi creating space (ie. Hyman, Bouchard, Tenderness).

That is a bad hockey team.

The longer it drags out, the better...

Already witnessing disgruntled rumblings from the sweatpantsed faithful.

His inevitable departure will make the Pronger fiasco look like a picnic.

I wonder if its too soon to start building an Edmonton-sized Acrylic Dome? You know...for containment?

Because otherwise the Army is going to have to go in and they'll have to re-name Whyte Avenue to the Avenue of Ashes.

I wonder if Connor told Leon "Yes, sign long term. I'm here for life. You and me will take this team to places unimaginable." ... but he had his fingers crossed when he said that.
