This is where it gets interesting. Can they overcome the fact the bullpen is complete ass? They'll make the playoffs barring a historic collapse. But a first place team is hard to see at this point.

Oh god, were the Yankees playing possum all season and now waking up?
The rest of their god dang schedule is against the Os & White Sox.
Might be in some trouble here...

Jays need to figure out the relief pitching really soon or the Division could be lost to either the Red Sox or the Yankees. Being the hunted is not an easy position to be in.

They just got dummied by the Red Sox. Yankees absolutely pound bad teams and lose to good teams. They're the worst 'good' team in baseball by a fairly large margin

No, not in this day and age where starters only go 6-7 innings. The bullpen either figures it out or this team is toast.

Yeah, but they're not playing possum. They are what they are.

Most years we are at least 7 games out at this stage of the season, and scrounging to put a 5 man rotation together. The bullpen has had good moments this season, and some very bad ones. We sure miss Yimi. Whatever the case, let's enjoy the baseball....can't get too down after losing to the literal best team in baseball. If I had told you we'd have a better record than the Dodgers on 8/30 back in April, most of you would have taken it. I hope they bring some fresh arms for the pen up from AAA and just keep a shorter leash on the relievers. (and maybe give certain starters a bit longer of a leash) Truth is, if Little didn't do what he did last night, that could have wound up a 2-1 win, who knows.

John Schneider's body of work as a manager indicates that this won't be the case.

Sure, but if they/he can keep it together he's going to be AL manager of the year. Very little contribution from any new faces and the record is likely going to be significantly improved from last year.

We will see.
Pressure is on to keep top 2 in the AL. Anything less than that and they go into the playoffs on a down note and in a 3 game series, who knows. Even if they come out of that, the mental energy spent won’t do them any favours for the next 1-3 rounds.
That pressure to stay top 2 seems to be getting some, and the manager has to keep things on track.
And as playoff likelihood creeps closer, a lot of talk about the choke vs Seattle and the “unconfident manager blaming analytics for the super early hook of a starter” from the last 2 playoff appearances.

Yeah. They need to get more innings from the starters if they're going to have a 6 man rotation. Some of the guys that have pitched poorly recently (eg Rodriguez, Varland, even Little) have had enough success that they don't suck, hopefully they can get some rest/reset as we hit Sept 1 (and they get an extra arm). They also called up Easton Lucas, presumably to be a long-reliever and try to avoid burning the whole bullpen if one of the starters goes short.

Ooof....still too soon to talk about that Seattle series. My sister had come to visit me in the mountains and gave me a mushroom chocolate when that one game seemed to be very much in the bag. Went for a hike up the mountain in a great mood and was watching on my phone (sitting on a stump) as things unraveled.

Gimenez’ defense has to be otherworldly to justify giving him any at bats. He’s just a complete black hole at the plate.

Come on Febles. You get a fluke Straw hit and then and error on an easy double play ball. Playing with house money. Send Springer. The OF didn’t even come up with the ball cleanly.

You share my exact sentiment, was just saying to myself watching that pathetic at bat that there’s no way his D makes up for his awful hitting.

Shulman and Siddel have noticeably tried so hard these last 2 games to pump the Jays players tires, Bichette especially and it’s just blown up.
