For Lanny it was more like, if performance or “elite” on ice qualities is the main metric, there are a bunch of other guys above him (not including Backlund here) who should be there. But they aren’t, and he is, so obviously all that other “stuff” is incredibly important.
It would be a pretty interesting discussion if the Flames won a cup in the late teens or early 20s with the Gaudreau/Monahan/Tkachuk/veteran core, as Backlund was massively important for those young guys' development, sheltering and mentoring them as they entered the league.

But if they won one then, the makeup of this team would probably be a lot different today which would introduce a pile of other complications (like who else should get retired from that hypothetical cup winning team).

Let's hope they get a couple in the next 15 years and we can debate which of the Stanley cup winning contributors -- Wolf, Parekh, Reschny etc -- deserves their number to be retired.

It’s too bad that they weren’t able to get something done with Andersson in the offseason and we are entering the season with his situation and the Zary situation hanging out there.

My gut feel is that the Zary deal will get done before training camp as it doesn’t really make sense for either side to drag it out. Zary probably doesn’t want to miss camp because that rarely ends well and the Flames have tons of cap space.

As for Andersson this one is much trickier. On one hand it could be a benefit in that Andersson can be used as a tool to help transition younger players into the lineup. The flip side is getting a terrible return if Andersson digs his heels in everytime they get a decent offer. Hopefully everyone can work together kind of like what Tkachuk did to get the best outcome for both sides. That’s what I think will ultimately happen.

It’s also possible Andersson comes in super motivated for a contract and has an amazing year and is worth infinitely more than where current offers are at. The psychology of a final contract year boost is something that happens all the time.

Add that with his Olympic motivation and he should have a good year.
He needs to be moved before the Olympics to avoid any injury.
Which becomes the rub because other teams looking to acquire him might have the same worry.

If Andersson come roaring out of the gates this season, I suspect he will be dealt earlier than later. A red hot RHS that can be had for a minimal cap hit is still insane value.

Hell, a fully retained Andersson having just an average season has incredible value.

It'll be interesting to see how it all unfolds.

I'd put 2 9 12 13 14

Both Kipper and Vernon are really close but don't quite make it imo
