Depends where you live. Inner city people in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, or Montreal have as sophisticated palates as anyone in North America.

Applaud the attempt to sneak Calgary in there. I mean I guess mini-donuts and Chicken on the Way is about as sophisticated as it gets.

As surprising as it is, Calgary legitimately has developed one of the better food scenes in North America over the past 5-10 years. Certainly punches well above its weight.

Sure, but it's still not even close to those other three cities.

I would put Calgary above Vancouver in many ways. You literally have one of the best bars (Missy's This That) and best pizza places (Noble Pie) in Canada.
I travel around Canada a lot for work, and holy #### man, that stretch from 17th to 5th Ave, between like 2nd and 10th St has incredible food. One of the best emerging urban neighbourhoods in North America, imo.

Look, if you're comparing North American food to Europe or Asia, yeah, we are peasants here.

Calgary is fine, some high quality choices no doubt. I'd compare to like a KC in America, which has GOATed BBQ, but New York/LA/Chicago it is not. And obviously no one is comparing to Europe or Asia, we have far too poor inputs to even remotely compare. Dairy difference alone is beyond embarrassing.

Never been to Carolina, Texas BBQ is pretty good, but my trip to KC converted me to their BBQ being top shelf, easily gained five pounds that weekend.

It definitely is, especially when you balance for size.
It lacks the selection of high quality spots that cities 2-3x its size does, but in terms of actual quality it hangs with any of the best in North America.
It’s nothing like a place where you have to go because they just do one thing the best. It actually benefits from not being that, as it has no reputation to live up to or default food that everyone just comes to try, so you don’t get a dozen different places pretending to do that one thing the best.

No one is traveling to Calgary for the food, but the food is a nice surprise for a lot of people. I'm not going to pretend that I know where the best places in the world are, but my girlfriend friend's from the states are all really impressed with what we have here for restaurants. The other comment is how clean the city is. Which after visiting Chicago I understand.

Nobody is travelling anywhere in Canada "for the food." Outside of New York... maybe LA... nobody in North America is travelling "for the food." I would travel to London or Tokyo "for the food."

How many people are outright travelling for food only to begin with? I think it's maybe a consideration in a choice of city, but surely not that many people are like "I'm going to London for the food mostly".

We went to the UK last year with a friend who was over the first time, she had never had mushy peas and when we went to a fish place and she got some it was a life changing moment for her. Which....yeah lol I guess.
