Sounds like they're only dropping the ones that fall under CUSMA. The retaliatory ones on steel, aluminum and autos remain while discussions with the U.S. are ongoing.

Yeah, looks like he's dropping the "political pressure" tariffs... stuff like Orange Juice from Florida and basically just matching the U.S. section 232 tariffs and "not covered by CUSMA" tariffs.

Prime Minister MARK CARNEY is headed to Germany next week.

Our colleagues in Berlin learned today in a government briefing that Chancellor FRIEDRICH MERZ will welcome Carney on Tuesday morning. The pair will talk about a variety of bilateral foreign and economic issues, including tariffs and the war in Ukraine.

Energy and Natural Resources Minister TIM HODGSON is also heading to Germany to hustle Canada’s critical minerals.

Playbook has learned Hodgson will do the rounds in Berlin on Tuesday, meeting with CEOs and executives from energy, manufacturing and defense companies. He’ll also deliver a speech to a business crowd at the Canadian embassy.

“It’s really a trade mission focused on energy and critical minerals,” said a government official with knowledge of the minister’s plans, and who was granted anonymity to speak about them.

Germany is “one of the priority markets” in the EU because it is the continent’s largest economy, the official noted.

I find the sociology behind this interesting. Carney can remove these tarriffs and effectively give up nothing to the States because many Canadians are simply boycotting American products irrespective of cost.

I do wonder, are there any numbers which show how far reaching or effective the Canadian boycott of American goods actually have been?

I read an article last week in the Wall Street Journal about alcohol in particular, and it's been punishing for many of the smaller distillers and brewers. In that scenario, it's not only the individual boycotts that are involved, but also the provinces not buying US alcohol through their liquor control boards and such. Some of the smaller distillers were getting hit hard by this, and of course, Alberta caved.

I still think that grocery store shoppers must have some impact, though. There is a lot of labelling to convince us that products are Canadian in some capacity.

Maybe already posted in this thread, but there was news story a little while ago that said data indicates that since Canada started boycotting American liquor, liquor sales in general have gone down, including sales of Canadian brands. They implied that rather than choosing a Canadian option, many people just decided to cut back their alcohol consumption in general.

Which is good I guess for the overall health of the population, but not good from a revenue generating position.

Anyway, I really hate that to play ball with Trump, you need to placate him. It may be what is needed to deal with him, but it also strengthens him because you know it will be interpreted as a strong man win.
