How does that affect Express Flights? We're flying YTZ-YQY on Monday both AC Express.

Need to know if I should prepare the family for the chance of having Avoin rebook us YYZ-YYC-YQY on WestJet.

A UPS United Parcel Service Boeing 747-8 freighter, registration N613UP performing flight 5X-61 from Hong Kong (China) to Taipei (Taiwan), was on its third approach to Taipei's runway 05L in gusting winds at 20:08L (12:08Z), when the right hand wing lowered after touchdown causing the engine #4 (outboard right) nacelle to contact the ground briefly.

I am wondering if anybody knows where I can find recent flight path changes? There is a much higher level of airplane traffic over my house in the SW (West Springs, Coach Hill, Bow Trail area) than I ever recall. At first I thought it as more G7 related but that is long gone.

Probably has a something to do with the closure of 17R/35L. Most flights from the west would typically land on that runway, but not that that 17L/35R is the only active north-south runway, the pattern has probably changed to allow for better spacing.

As stazzy33 says, there are runway related changes but it shouldn't really be affecting you in that area. When the planes are landing to the south and coming in over Airdrie, which is just over half the time, all the ones from the southwest pass track Sarcee northbound from Glenmore right over top of you at about 10,000 feet, then west of Airdrie they make a big sweeping right to land to the south over Cross Iron Mall. That flight path hasn't changed at all and the number of planes coming from that direction hasn't changed. Also, that high up it shouldn't be that loud for you.

What I think you're seeing/hearing is departures. Since they're down to one runway they're having departures start a turn on course sooner after takeoff to get out of the way so another one can launch behind. So some planes are blasting soutbound off YYC, turning west immediately and climbing to 9,000 (to not hit the arrivals above) as they pass over West Springs. Before the runway closure, departures almost never turned westbound before passing downtown so you'd never see them.

We should be getting the other runway back in December.

Acey,

Thank you so much for this! I am a little bit of an airplane geek and it's not that the planes are bothering me, I just don't ever recall a strong level of traffic literally overtop of my house. Your explanation makes perfect sense.

A few friends claimed we always had this level of traffic in the area but I know that to be false as I can point out the plane models. Dreamliner here, A350 there. They clearly are not going to Kelowna so what's up, ya know?

Thanks!
