Ya, it's been a long time though since that was the case. I think a lot of it has to do with things impacting people's lives that have nothing to do with hockey. The world is a lot worse of a place then even 10 years ago. Everything is expensive and crazy so it's not surprising people are over confrontational on a public message board.

It's not that deep. It's August and this is the natural life cycle of this thread every year for oh at least 20 years or more. Welcome to the offseason and the dog days of summer!

We were blessed the previous few years though. Summers of 2022, 2023 and 2024 had significant player movements to discuss that kept everyone occupied.

Things can evolve and/or change fast in the NHL. Aspiring to be like Dallas is predicated on those picks we're so excited about actually hitting in the NHL. This is a nice vision to have, it's a convenient one for ownership because it means you're perennially competitive and your amateur scouting is routinely winning drafts.
Could we be Dallas? Sure. But we could also be San Jose.
As for fans, what we do makes no difference, but condemning people by saying 'this is the direction, quiet you' makes for a not so fun vibe around here. How things unfold is anyone's guess.
|
You might be missing the point here. Much like Boston or San Jose or whoever else, the Flames added Huberdeau, Weegar, and Kadri with one direction in mind and, when it was clear it wasn’t working out, they changed direction and traded the majority of their top forwards, defencemen, and starting goaltender. So saying the Flames have just been doing the same thing and it’s time for a new direction is silly. They did exactly that. Some patience is required here to see how this plays out. Teams aren’t rebuilt in year two when they’re still in the process of moving vets out and bringing young players in.
All this talk of them not tanking or trading away vets is just silly. They’ve done that. Hanley is was playing on the first pairing and Klapka was taking reps on the top line lol.
Conroy can only make the moves he can make. Nobody predicted the team would be as good as they were. They looked like an easy bottom-ten team. They weren’t. They still walked away with what looks like one of the best centres on paper in the entire draft because he had a ho-hum start to the season and is an inch too short. That’s why you let these things play out instead of hand wringing about everything before we even know whether it’s the right direction or the wrong one.
I’m sure people can handle being told to let it play out and still have fun. We have to sit through condescending comments about us fans that are placated by “pillow talk” and being happy with a “nice, convenient vision” or mockery and discounting around the concepts of “leadership” or “competitiveness” (real things btw), which isn’t lending to “fun vibes” either, so I’m sure people can handle being told to be patient because they’re mad the team isn’t a cup contender at the end of year two of a rebuild.

Atleast one (if not two) of our 2026 1st, Zary and Bruz would be going.
Put me in the camp that would overpay for a young Center like McTavish.

The Ducks and Kings are very different teams.
The Kings are much older with their oldest players also being their star players (Kopitar & Doughty). Even more than that, the average age of the Kings D group is 29.9yo.
The Ducks are a much younger group with their star players being some of their youngest players. The average age of the Ducks' D group is 25.3.
The Kings have $1.9M in cap space and the Ducks have $20M in cap space.
It is easy to see the Kings are more likely to decline and head into a rebuild whereas the Ducks are just finishing a rebuild and loaded up on talented players.
There is an interesting contract situation with the Ducks too. Trouba and Gudas both have 1 year left on their deals and I doubt either are re-signed. That would basically set up Andersson to be the one and only vet in a D group where everyone else is 25 or under.
Also, the Ducks prospect situation works better for Andersson than the Kings. The Kings have a couple of 1st round pick young Dmen (Clarke and Brzustewicz) who would be challenging Andersson's spot in a short amount of time.
The Ducks, on the other hand, do not have elite RD prospects and their best D prospects are LD: Mintyukov and Solberg. Andersson could work with these guys and compliment them
IMO when looking at the Cali teams, Andersson would do well to go to either the Ducks or Sharks and avoid the Kings.

That is what the flames between June 2023 and July 2024, trading 8 roster players and basically getting nothing back in return. They did the scorched earth rebuild arguably better than it has ever been done in NHL history in terms of number of assets and how good those assets actually were at the time they were moved. Despite this aggressive tear it down approach to rebuilding it did not work for the Flames last season.
You also need your young players/prospects in the organization at the time of the rip it down to the studs/trade 8 roster players for basically no current assets to suck. This is where the flames effort failed, the young players (Wolf, Coronato, Zary) did not suck enough.

I essentially started saying the direction is fluid, you said it's not fluid it's a direction, I doubled on fluid and you seem to be stating the same thing another way? That's not me missing a point, it's semantics.
I'm fully aware of the concepts of leadership and competitiveness, thank you.
You're mischaracterizing the rebuild crowd's urgency to rebuild (in an excellent draft year) with expediting some sort of cup window. Any realistic fan in favor of tearing this down even further recognizes this is going to be 3-5 years before any sniff of the playoffs again (which it may be anyway), and even further out from contending for a cup unless they get extremely lucky.

FWIW I've been told ANA is NOT on his 10 team list.
Cant say he'd re-sign there however.

I think players looking for a successful team rarely think of teams "on the upswing". They seem very focused on right now. That's why IMO he likes LV (plus taxes and glitz) even though IMO tLV has already peaked and is heading for a slide.

Doesn't Andersson have a 6 team no trade list? Not that it matters, I imagine 2 of them are BUF, and EDM... so that only leaves 4 teams.

Buffalo
Ottawa
Winnipeg
Detroit
Columbus
These are the five that I have heard of pretty consistently.

Isn’t the difference between “a direction” and “the very beginning of a direction” also semantics? I’m not sure trying to be a cup contender and rebuilding are examples of the fluidity of a direction, those are different directions my guy. The one they were facing three years ago, and the one they switched to two years ago. But if you meant the same thing I had already said, that’s cool. And to that point, I’m not mischaracterizing anything, I’m continuing the conversation from the post I originally responded to.
Someone said the Flames have been trying the same thing for a long time and should try a different direction. I said they changed direction two years ago and we should be patient and let it play out. You said we aren’t at the point where we should let it play out and the direction might become what the direction already is? lol, I don’t get it.
I don’t know how to break this to you but the team has been rebuilding for two years and is, actively, tearing it down further (Andersson, maybe Coleman and Backlund, maybe Kadri after next year). You want something you already have, you’re just complaining that it doesn’t look exactly like you thought it would.

It would make sense for him not to waste a spot on his list for them. The Flames would be really unlikely to trade him there and they really don't have anything interesting to offer.

I disagree. If you support Trump you support racism, pedophilia, rape, mass murder, and a dictatorship. If you are going to use an avatar of a man who is almost on par with Adolf Hitler you reap what you sew.
