I saw some light complaining about the Kirk portrayal on reddit, but i agree that it was actually quite good imo. He felt a lot like Kirk, but earlier in the career. Way more like what I expected a young Kirk to be than the 2009 movie Kirk (who, to be fair, had entirely different childhood and life.)

The scene where Scotty was saying "here are our two best options, and they both suck. But we're gonna have to choose one." And then Kirk saying "I'm not choosing either of those" reminded me a lot of Kirk in Wrath of Khan when he talked about how he doesn't believe in a no-win scenario.

TARDIS appeared in this episode. Doctor Who is canon in this universe and you can’t disagree.

I enjoyed it and the portrayal of Kirk I thought was really good.

I thought the human is the enemy could have been better executed, as it stood it was just there to question I guess morality, but that part fell flat for me.

Has anyone felt that they're kind of sidelining Pike a bit this season?

Obviously this series is going to end with Kirk taking command of the Enterprise, so I guess they're starting to set that up now. They also seem to be giving equal screen time to almost every character, which is fine. But yea, I could definitely use some more Pike in these episodes.

I think there's a real push for a Paul Wesley led series after SNW finishes up.

The one, small qualm I have with Paul Wesley is that he's too old to be playing a ~25 year old Kirk. Guy is pushing 50...

I was sure it was going to be the Pakled. I thought they prefaced it as a Lower Decks joke where Pike said a line like "They come from some strange dark universe".

Ah well, like it better as it turns out serious in that even the best of humanity can get desperate and do horrible things.

Reminded me of Archer stealing the Cardassian's warp drive in season 3 or 4 of Enterprise.

I was leaning the same way myself but I'm happier with this one, the Pakled are just too much of a joke. This worked out way better that Humanity's best and brightest peaced out when things got tough.

Interestingly, I felt that it was a strong parallel to the Romulan/Vulcan split. Those were the Human romulans.

Really cool episode, I very much enjoyed that one! Not quite 'great courtroom drama' but another episode that put itself out there and I thought it paid off nicely.

The plot was interesting, but I really didn't like the format/style. This episode was my least favorite of all Strange New Worlds.

The documentary filming looked cheap, like something from a handy cam from 2000.

I dont know why thats a standard thing. Star Trek and Star Wars both do it, but their digital playback quality is always atrocious.

I refused to watch the Blair Witch or Cloverfield because of the shaky found footage look. It just looks cheap and if you have eyesight like mine it ruins the visuals to the point they aren't worth watching.

This episode disappoints me more than usual because the poor video doesn't fit the narrative. Beto got special clearance from Starfleet, he's not some hack and he has super advanced camera's. So why's it look bad?

Star War's atleast has that grungy industrial universe esthetic, so the shacky holo tech makes some sense.

I would have preferred the episode shot normally instead of told through the release of the documentary. I get why it was done as a narrative choice, but I felt like it was a bit wasted by ####ty avant-garde artistic like camera angles and faux-candid moments.

But I understand why they shot it that way and liked the episode enough still. I wouldn't rank it as bad as a stinker TNG episode, for example.

Nah, I actually think they explain this a bit in the episode, and it makes sense in the narrative of the episode and how it's shot. He came in starting to shoot it like a ####ty expose and he's focusing on all the wrong things, including in how he's shooting it, the angles he's using. I found the camera angles and shooting actually became more clear as the episode went along, in a kind of reflection of him growing up a bit and realizing that his initial petulant take on Starfleet was probably wrong.

I did point out to my wife though, that although he was acting like a dumb twerp, he is asking the right question about starfleet. It is, almost certainly, a very scary military apparatus for the empire that is the federation, and has even taken over earth and declared martial law in canon. Fed citizens should definitely be asking questions like this.
On the other hand, picking on them for fighting in the Klingon war when Klingons of this era would have happily raped every person on earth was a strange choice.

While Star Fleet was suppossed to be an exploratory and diplomatic arm of the Federation, we've seen on multiple occassions where its tried to enact a take over of the government.

In Undiscovered Country they conspired with Chang to create a endless war between the human's in Klingons. For the Klingons because of their warrior culture in the face of the end of their empire. For the human's they thought the Klingons would become the lower trash of the Federation, so the two enemies conspired.

In DS9 The changelings, literally created a fear of terrorism and conquest and one admiral wanted to take advantage of it to secure power for Star Fleet as an answer to security.

If you ever want to see a well executed military cabal, the video game Wing Commander 4 and the novel False Colors, and Admiral Tolwyn's reaction to humanity winning the war and that there were multiple plots by different people happening at the same time.
