Default Suns Trade for Cap Space

Phx just dumped Kurt Thomas on the Sonics' lap for a couple picks. That freed up about 8mil... cue more Garnett rumours?

Man, I'd love to see some Nash-to-Garnett next season.

[Edit: Sucks it had to be Kurt, though. I've always liked his game.]

He's not a starter, he's a D-specialist on the most offensive-minded team in the last 20 years.

(That should give you an idea as to how much he plays)

I just like the guy because he plays a simple, reliable shut-down game without any of the BS diving and acting like he just got shot... or any of the hands crap that Bowen gets away with.

Oh... here's the clicky, by the way.

Doesn't look like KG will be a Sun anytime soon.

http://www.allheadlinenews.com/articles/7007934062

Minneapolis, MN (AHN) - The owner of the Minnesota Timberwolves revealed recently he plans on keeping superstar Kevin Garnett because the All-Star basketball player told him he does not want to be traded.

"I talked to K.G. about (the trade rumors)," he told the St. Paul Pioneer Press on Monday. "I just asked him (about a possible trade) and he'd say 'No, I haven't changed my mind.' His preference was that we not trade him."

Actually the trade is Thomas and Phoenix sending two first round picks to the Sonics for one 2nd round pick. I wonder how long it will be until we start seeing deals like this in the NHL. First one was Malakhov for a single first round pick. I suspect we'll start seeing this come into hockey more and more.

yep, I was just going to say that when I read the first post. Basically using picks as a bribe to unload salary.

The value of cap space is at work and in this case actually valued.

It has never been this extreme in the NFL, most of the time decent players will go for low round picks, simply because when you are paid at market rate after becomming a UFA your value to someone else approaches zero.

The math would be something like:

Value add to the team less cap hit = almost zero.

I agree it is a totally salary dump. Isn't Portland did the same thing recently in Draft day picking up Steve Francis and some other guy then dumped them both.

I am a huge Steve Nash fan and of course I cheer for the Suns next to Toronto Raptors. I am glad that they got rid Kurt Thomas and his big salary because the guy did not do anything during the playoffs. I am hoping that would free up some money to get some help ie: KG without losing Marion or Stoudamaire via trade.

Anyone think Nash is gong to get the opportunity to win the big one in Pheonix? Or at all? Started to get a little worried for the guy. One of the best players of our time, still little playoff success. Srry to derail, but do you think it's him, dos he need to be even more 'Jordon', or has he not been provided with the team yet?

Thomas could match up with Tim Duncan some nights and then others he just looked lost on the floor.

If the suns wouldnt of got screwed over last playoffs with the suspensions, maybe

Or if Stoudimire wouldnt of been hurt the year before, Maybe

Nash has seem to got better over the last 3 years

He'll have his championship someday. Nash can only do so much for the team. He needs the supporting cast as well. Last season, they got screwed by the league when Horry intentionally bumped Nash then two of Phoenix players Stoudamaire and I can't remember the other guy's name got suspended. It is more like 2 against 1 suspensions and the guy who started it only received 2 games. I am sure Horry will have no problem doing exactly the same thing again if he can take 2 opponent players with him.-+

Not sure if they're trying to pave the way for a trade. I would bet it's just a simple move to try and get the payroll down so the owners don't have to pay the luxury tax. I've read they're cheap like that.

Read on SI (or maybe Fox?) that the general rumbling around the NBA is that this was just a precurser to bringing in some help for Nash. Also Marion is still being shopped.

Common belief (either way) is that the Suns aren't finished.

Edit: Which reminds me... I wish there was an "Ecklund" for the NBA. Accurate or not, I'd rather read something than nothing during the off-season.

having a winter home in phx growing up i have been a suns fans since the J kidd days. Marbury, was and still probably is my favorite player in the league. Nothing against Nash but Marbury was an absolute beauty.

ive loved the suns for a long time, i remember when the suns got Kurt Thomas, i was a little surprised. I think one poster said it best earlier. some nights he looked great, other nights he looked garbage. He did hit that game tieing 3 vs La in 06 didnt he though?
oh well, losing him is no loss. Its pretty sad when he made 8 mill and nash makes like 6......

Raja Bell, Amare, Marion are all good enough on defense
Nash G Hill are gonna be amazing
Barbossa is the best 6th man in the nba

Stoudermire and Diaw dont get suspended last year, the suns win that series, and most likly the nba championship.

losing Kurt is no loss

p.s. the spurs are dirty
