I just don't see NHL teams taking the PR risk for a group of player that are replacement level. Hart is the exception I suppose.

Dube: 7 points in 43 games in his last season. Someone would have to beleive he can rebound to his form from the year before

Michael McLeod: 19 points in 45 games

Cale Foote: ended his last NHL season in the minors

Alex Formenton: I think he has said he's not even playing any more.

Are any of those guys worth giving a chance to?
The risk/reward of it all just doesn't make sense.

Hart will be an Oiler by the end of training camp, probably sooner.

Oilers don't care about PR, that city and fan base doesn't care about anything except winning.

Sounds like the consent videos made by McLeod went a long way with the judge:

https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/liv.../bZQqdVCk9IEK/

Quote:
Judge addresses consent videos recorded by Michael McLeod
LONDON, Ont. — Justice Carroccia also spent some time recapping what was said in the consent videos recorded by Michael McLeod that night in London.

In the first video, E.M. says, "I'm OK with this." In a second, she said, "It was all consensual."

Carroccia says E.M. did "not display any signs of intoxication” in the videos and had “no difficulty speaking." E.M. alleged in court that, although she said it was all consensual, that is not how she felt at the time.

Is Dube owed money by the Flames with respect to his remaining contract?

Based on what was reported, I agree with her.
Unfortunately "lacked credibility" sounds worse than it may mean in judicial parlance.

I fully expect that the Oilers will do what they always do, and pursue Hart.

However, Hart has not played a competitive game in more than 18 months. Not only that, but if the Oilers subject him to being an NHL goalie, the pressure he will be under from fans will be immense and relentless. I strongly doubt he will ever provide high level goaltending for them.

Their constantly repeated strategy of gifting individuals playing time (instead of having them earn it) has consistently shown to be an ineffective strategy, and it will do so again here.

Much was made by the prosecution about the presence of golf clubs and multiple men in the room, and how they raised the prospect that EM's consent in the evening was coerced. But that didn't really apply in the early morning hours when it was just McLeod and EM present, after they had taken a shower together, and the second video was taken. It's harder to see how that statement was made under coercion. The judge, who saw and heard the video, seems to believe it was genuine.

Not surprising. There’s a couple posts here of people that were just waiting to celebrate these guys/denigrate the victim, as we knew there would be. It’s just the way some men operate.

Not surprised by the result given the trial. But I feel sorry she had to go through that again, already having gained anything she could have personally gained if that were her goal, only to be subject to abuse online by strangers.

I wonder how the verdict would have differed if it was a jury trial. Looks like the judge was really against EM and the Prosecution the entire time.

As they say, bad facts make bad law.

I am very disappointed by the verdicts.

One takeaway of this is that a potentially coerced video taken after a harrowing evening absolves all sins. I think that if you put any of us in EM's situation, where she still hasn't been able to leave, then we would say whatever the videographer wanted.

The part that really makes no sense to me about the whole thing is that she went through with the trial. There was no benefit to her to do that. She had been paid. Much of the evening was still private. Why testify if she really did want the night to happen? An attempt to remove some of the shame she felt afterwards?

It is such a setback for victims. Who is going to come forward to the criminal justice system now?

It also doesn't do any good for the Hockey Canada program where the stereotype that hockey players can do what they want to whoever they want. At least HC can say they did the right thing based on the verdicts, I guess.

As the evidence played out it did seem like the Crown overshot their evidence and/or they did not present it well. Frankly, all the distractions should not matter to professionals. The evidence is what it is and you present it in the best way to ensure the trier of fact can make an educated decision.

Very sad all around.

I think the Crown messed this case up.
I don't agree that the Judge went farther than she needed to.
The facts and findings do need to be set out, for both transparency and appealability.

Most decisions I get have references to credibility of witnesses, especially in diametrically opposing positions, as was the case here.

I do agree the Crown messed up.

I suppose we should also remember Hart wasn't actually all that good in his time with the Flyers. Still, it bothers me to no end that they'll do this and we all see it coming.
