Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is demanding the fire-stricken town of Jasper apologize and retract a report criticizing her government for its role in last summer's devastating blaze.
Smith also blames the federal government for failing in the fire response by not asking sooner for provincial help and for not clearing out dead trees that provided fuel for the flames.
The report commissioned by the municipality reflects a survey of firefighters and other front-line staff who battled the blaze, which destroyed a third of buildings in the town located in the federally run Jasper National Park.
The municipality and Parks Canada had jurisdiction in fighting the fire.
Those surveyed said Alberta officials got in the way with requests for information and issues management and they interfered in making decisions outside their jurisdiction.

No reflection, no acceptance of blame, no "we'll see what we can do better." No, they call out the people of the town that got burned down, claim words from first responders are a politically motivated attack, and demand an apology from the entire town. You know, the one that lost everything. Well #### them, they should say sorry, too.
The town should respond with a separation referendum.

Some of her quotes are amazing:
"This was a federal fire. It took place in a federal park, and it was a federal Parks Canada response"

If Mexico and Australia can send firefighters to Alberta surely Alberta can send firefighters into a national park.

I do find that interesting with the whole dumb separation thing. If this is a federal park, a federal fire, then seems she has ceded that any separation from Canada would mean Banff national park and Jasper national park are Canadian and would not be going with Alberta. Curious if that would change the minds of the dumb people wanting to separate.

Who's the area MLA?
Martin Long.
He should sit as an Independent until Danielle Smith apologizes to his constituents.

It is so much worse when you consider the cuts the province made to the fire fighting and fire prevention efforts. They cut millions and millions out of firefighter programs, eliminated training for volunteer fightfighters, closed fire watchtowers, and worst of all they eliminated the Firefighter Rappel Team.
This Rappel team was an elite group who specialized in fighting wild fires in mountainous regions. Regions like... Jasper.
Even if Jasper is in the national park, historically it would have been an "all hands on deck" situation and the Rappel team would have been deployed and almost certainly would have reduced the damage to the town.
Note: The rappel team had been in place for 40 years.
But what is a magnitude worse is that a lot of those cuts took place in 2019/2020. The people of Jasper could have voted for a party that would have reversed those cuts but instead they voted for more UCP.
How much do the leopards need to eat their faces before they stop voting for the Leopards Eating People's Faces party???

Spot on except for the last sentence. The town of Jasper voted 637 NDP to 184 UCP on election day and 732 NDP to 172 UCP advanced.
Of course they were the only polling station in the riding to favour NDP (except for "Grande Cache Community Health Complex, Whispering Pines Lodge" who voted 8-3 in favour of NDP).
