Ari Aster's new movie is out today, Eddington. I gave Beau is Afraid a rewatch recently and enjoyed it more than the first time, I'm in.

Caught up on a bunch of movies lately and didn't have time to review. Enjoy:

Death of a Unicorn: A fantasy horror that takes place in Canada despite not being filmed in Canada. Was an engaging movie with some cool moments but was predictable with an unsubtle message and iffy special effects. Worth watching for Will Poulter's performance. 7/10

Deep Cover: An interesting comedy concept that provides some laughs and twists. Felt like it was missing something and needed to flesh out the characters and criminal plot a bit more. Not sure Bryce Dallas Howard is lead actor material but did enjoy Orlando Bloom's over the top performance. 7/10

The Electric State: How is it possible to make a robot movie so boring? Has some potential with interesting world building but does nothing with it. Just a generic predictable adventure movie. 4/10

Fountain of Youth: Another generic straight to streaming adventure movie, this one feeling like a National Treasure rip off. Has some fun action set pieces but the repetitive humour doesn't land and the plot is trope filled. Has to be Guy Ritchie's worst movie. 4/10

Harold and the Purple Crayon: It's tough to turn a short children's book into a full length movie and I kind of get what they were going for but it doesn't work at all. The story is all over the place and the character development is unearned. Maybe could have been saved with more engaging drawing effects. Did enjoy Jermain Clement hamming it up as the villain. 4/10

KPop Demon Hunters: What if Buffy was a KPop band? This was great! Awesome animation and catchy music with a fast paced story makes this pure joy for the senses. Could have used more backstory and world building but suspect we get than in the sequel. I'm definitely a sucker for these new Sony animated movies and think they have surpassed Pixar in offering entertainment for the whole family with exciting new animation that is worth the hype. Can we get that 3rd Spider Verse already? 10/10

LOTR The War of the Rohirrim: I enjoyed the animation and this started off with a lot of promise but it's just kind of dull with the 2nd act especially being a drag. Doesn't really add much to the LOTR lore and ends up just being an origin story on how Helm's Deep was named. 5/10

M3gan: I really need to give more horror movies a chance because I originally dismissed this as a dumb scary movie and only watched after hearing about the good reviews in relation to sequel. Sure it is predictable with some cheesy dialog but it's really engaging and a lot of fun. Blends sci fi with horror and comedy while having interesting themes. 9/10

Mikey 17: I really enjoyed the book and this doesn't disappoint as an adaptation. Is well paced having an interesting sci fi premise with some dark humour and solid acting from Pattinson. Did think too much time was spent on Mark Ruffalo's parody of an image obsessed leader and Toni Collette's unnecessary character when other characters could have been fleshed out more with additional focus on the ethics of cloning and survival themes. 8/10

Ricky Stanicky: An absurd comedy that is way better than it deserves to be mainly because of John Cena showing off a wide range of comedic skill. Does take a few jokes too far but to be expected from a Farrelly. Predicted a more darker ending with consequences for the main characters but the more positive approach was fine. Also laughed at how it was obviously filmed in Australia with the random Aussie actors popping up. 8/10

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty: I don't normally bother to review decade old movies but had to share how much I loved this. Didn't watch it years ago because I didn't take Ben Stiller seriously but after loving Severence had to give it a go. Just a well made film with a great cast, fun story, and brilliant character arc with a deeply heart warming ending. One of my favourite movies ever. 10/10

The Three Musketeers D'Artagnan & Milady: Will review these two French adaptations together as they are basically a single narrative split in half. Offers what you would expect with some exciting sword fighting action and a conspiracy plot with lots of twists. Did find some of the plot decisions questionable with two of the musketeers basically sidelined for much of the story. Also can't go wrong with a dose of Eva Green who gets to show off her bilingualism. 8/10

The Wild Robot: Another example of Disney/Pixar being surpassed as the standard for animation, this time by Dreamworks. This has absolutely gorgeous animation and some interesting themes about the environment and what it means to be a parent. The story did drag a bit at times and I would have liked to see more world building. 9/10

The Amateur was ok? I like Rami Malek. Fairly straightforward but had a couple twists and turns. I’ve seen better action spy movies but I’ve seen a lot worse.

I watched Talk to Me last night as I've been hearing hype about A24's new movie Bring Her Back (haven't seen BHB yet because I'm too cheap to pay 20 bucks to watch a movie at home).
It was a pretty good, maybe 7/10 overall, worth a watch. Had some vibes of Hereditary and Smile... Though I found myself not super sympathetic for teenagers at a party dabbling in awful things they shouldn't and recording it all on their phones and laughing. I guess clueless teenagers doing things they shouldn't is a horror staple (i.e. 80's slasher movies). And how today's kids record everything on their phones, no matter how awful, is probably on point...
I just found the main character somewhat annoying.

The first half was great. the last half was trash. so 5/10...

If you're a fan of Aster, you'll want to see it. It captures his craziness in a different way, more based in reality, sometimes a bit too much and I wonder if we still need a few more years to pass before we can absorb a covid movie like this. Phoenix is great and I really liked Pascal, my favorite thing he's done so far. A lot of small things didn't work for me as for the story but overall I didn't enjoy being reminded how misinformed and looney some people became during that stretch of time.

Felt like a loose spiritual successor to The Substance with the body horror aspect.

Solid mix of creepy and funny. I had a good time.

SO glad we got that and not IKWYDLS. That one looked like forgettable rubbish. This was great.

Neon is proving to be a worthy nemesis to A24. Pumping out artsy horror bangers.

Eddington is a wild ride.

None of it is comfortable and no one is likable, and it's not one you'll revisit any time soon. But it's an "experience" you'll be glad you saw once. One only Ari Aster could deliver.

I hope he returns to narrative-driven horror again after this though. Hereditary and Midsommar were bonafide classics.

The new I Know What You Did Last Summer is ####ing terrible.

I had at least modest hopes that it would be an entertaining nostalgic reboot after Scream / Halloween / Final Destination all pulled off decent to good attempts.

This one is irredeemable however. 4 movies in the franchise and Sarah Michelle Gellar's character is the only remotely likeable one. Nobody's actions felt justified or logical, and worst of all it was really boring. A bad horror movie can still be fun, but this was just a waste of time.

It's honestly close. I'll Always Know is bad but at least kinda entertaining in how stupid it was.

I enjoyed Jurassic World Rebirth. Was a fun cinematic experience that made great use of the Atmos surround sound. Is easily the best of the Jurassic World reboots and thankfully mostly ignores them in a return to the series roots. There are lots of call backs to the original series including being trapped on an abandoned island, like JP 3, and an Alan Grant stand in. The plot and characters are half baked but work well enough to set up some great dinosaur set pieces. I did especially hate the useless boyfriend character and they could have done so much more with just a single dad trying to connect with his daughters. Another thing that bugged me was the focus on extra scary hybrid dinosaurs when regular dinosaurs are more than scary enough. The T-Rex scene was the best part of the movie. Also had to laugh at the plot point about people no longer caring about dinosaurs. They will always be cool. Will give a solid 7/10.

Superman was great. James Gunn has an expert grasp on the superhero genre.

I continue to be interested to see what he does with DC.

Over the last year we've been picking a movie series and going through them on Saturday nights with our daughter... well, she's been picking the movies. Sometimes the entire family joins in. We just finished up the entire Jurrasic Park and Jurrasic World series so we could go see the newest Jurrasic World movie... we went to see Superman instead (we only got past the first Superman too).


I was surprised to see that Superman was good! I quite enjoyed it. There were a few things here and there that I thought didn't need to happen like the inter-dimensional stuff but it is a super hero movie so... overall I enjoyed it and was happy we went. I liked the entire cast and thought they did a good job.


Maybe we'll see the 132nd Jurrasic Park movie in the next couple weeks.
