Went with Mews, he had eye popping numbers this season only really overshadowed by Parekh and Dickenson.

Crazy to think that one of Battaglia, Suniev or Morin will slip out of the top 10. This pool is DEEP and really only lacks the elite forward (preferable a C)

Love the defensemen at this range but Luke Misa should be here.

For me it's Mews. RHS defenseman who was 3rd in OHL defenesmen scoring and right behind Parekh in powerplay points. Looks like he could at the very least become a powerplay specialist in the NHL or more if he can make advances in his defensive game.

I think Morin is the choice here as he doesn't have any holes in his game.

Mews likely has a higher ceiling if he can put it together defensively. Misa is still a top 6 forward talent if he can overcome his size. Suniev and Battaglia could be productive NHLers if they can improve their skating.

I wonder if this is why he is eventually more a trade asset than a player the Flames keep.
I think to succeed he will need PP time. You are probably hoping he is a guy that is really good on the PP, and gets by even strength.

But Zayne is going to be PP1 given his absolutely elite offensive skills.

So I just don't know if there is room for a guy like Mews to be successful. Because the 25-30 seconds of PP time he gets each time, won't be worth it relative to his potential short comings even strength.

I guess here is the good news and bad news for Mews in one data snap shot

most points OHL defenceman in a season last 10 years

Parekh 24-25 107
Parekh 23-24 96
Brz 23-24 92
Dickinson 24-25 91
Mintyukov 22-23 88
Bouchard 17-18 87
Hoefenmayer 19-20 82
Mews 24-25 82

so 8th on the list but 3 spots ahead of him are seasons by current Flames prospects, Mews, Dickinson and the ZP seasons are the youngest ages though

I'm not going to write him off, but evaluations like this one do frighten me.

But where his game seems to lack is with his skating. Battaglia is not the slowest or clunkiest skater, but it is one of his biggest areas of improvement. It has affected his game at both ends of the ice, more so in the defensive zone. While in the defensive zone, his skating has limited him being able to move around and keep himself in the right position to better help the rest of his teammates. With the IQ and work ethic he does have though, he should make this less of a “downfall” to his game with some time and work.

I think skating is one of the easiest things to fix, much easier than IQ and work ethic.

That said, I voted Jurmo. Didn’t want to miss my chance.

Mews has a few red flags for me that push him out of my top 10... yes, he's behind Parekh, but he also scored at a slower pace on a higher end Wolves team and did nothing for them in their playoffs (two secondary assists in garbage time). Sandman mentioned some folks thought Calgary drafted a few players in the 2024 draft that fell because of attitude issues, and Mews who was a projected first rounder is an obvious candidate, so his first couple years in Michigan will be important to see what kind of player and person he becomes. I'll trust the amateur scouts/development coaching staff to help guide him.

In any case, I'm sticking with Battaglia. His progression has been significant and I think he has the highest chance of being a top line or key second line scorer of all the prospects left. Big body, good playmaking skills, great shot, good deception... only knock is his skating and it sounds like it's getting better and really is only his first few steps.

Why isn't Luke Misa getting more love? I'm pretty sure Bader's model really likes him, and I was looking on Dobber prospect, and his projecting as a 1st liner, and seems to be progressing year over year.

The Dobber model is incredibly basic and not really reliable.
I don't think it's a lack of Misa love, i just think it's the depth of the pool.
I have Misa in the next "batch".

Agreed, the pool is just really deep with guys that have NHL potential. Misa for me likely leads the next batch after Battaglia, Morin, Mews and Suniev are gone, and yet we still havent really gotten into the rest of the AHL guys that are knocking on the door other than Honzek and Bru. A guy like Stromgren gets better every year and has NHL size and speed, and should see some time with the big club this year. Then there's Kerins, Solovyov, Kuznetsov etc that could all be seeing some time, and i'm not ready to give up on Poirier.

We are talking about 15+ guys in the system with realistic shots at becoming NHLers, and I'm just not used to this as a Flames fan. Button, Conroy and team have done a fantastic job drafting and developing.

Misa should be a top ten prospect in this organization. But, this is a fan vote.

Morin for me. Comes from a great program with a superb coach. Two-way stability with enough skill to be excited for him to work well with Brz or Parekh potentially.

I can see him being a long term member of the top 4.

Going suniev. Sounds like he’s got some great tools, and if is able to get quicker, could be a real solid scorer.

Misa behind Kerins and Stromgren. Putting up points (very hot and cold) in the CHL, isn't a good indicator of NHL potential. Gotta look at his skill set and attributes more than production. He's a less developed Kerins IMO.

fair enough but who does he displace

2 of the guys he's currently 'competing' against- Battaglia and Mews were taken by the Flames in the same draft year but 2-3 rounds ahead of Misa- and they both had good enough years that he didn't close the gap on either of them (IMO). Morin, similar logic in the sense that he's a 2nd rounder from the year prior who is also progressing

so I don't think the organization necessarily would have him top 10r, not sure about 'outside' sources, but I don't think the few I"ve seen have him in the top 10 either?

Always such a tough call to decide on a run off or not.

They're within 7 votes with almost 40% of those that voted picking neither so a run off makes sense.

I think if it's within 5 votes it's a no brainer.
More than 10 and you just graduate the lead horse.

Tough call between.
