I don’t think bands have disappeared. There are more bands than there has ever been. Bands just don’t make the charts. Bands don’t get signed by major labels like they used to.

Like a less dynamic hippie version of Bono, he/they swept onto the scene in the early 90's, had a couple of big hits, and then went back to a more obscure career. I kept getting recent youtube suggestions of him doing stuff with Johnny Marr, so I had to revisit. Enjoy.
