Overall looks like a lean away from the flat and painted look back to the DaveArt hyper polished and busy style. Not a fan.

All had their own style or personal input / flare. Some kind of uniqueness. The masks today are every goalie calling DaveArt and asking him to put skulls and a logo and slapping on the team colours. You’re an NHL goalie, not 13 years old.
|
You're picking out the best of the best then going "the rest suck". The 90s had some awful ones too. If Martin Brodeur played now and his mask showed up here you'd think it was bland and boring. Although I do think it's just a factory now, the style of masks we see now were relatively new in the 90s so guys put some creativity behind then. Now a lot of goalies see it as a chore, they give it to a hack like Dave Art and go "do what you want". Ten layers of invisible wizard tech later and that's that.

Wolf has a Johnny tribute on the back of his mask this year.

Not sure if posted but Ilya Sorokin pays homage to former Isles Evgeni Nabokov with his new 24-25 mask.

He's only been in Calgary for development camps that take place around Stampede time. All he sees is cowboys.
Marauding Cossacks on horses would've been way cooler.

On the subject, I saw this website for the best mask designs of the 90s. It's probably just nostalgia, but I feel there were a lot more legendary masks back in those days. Goalies would find a concept and it would become their trademark.
https://www.sikids.com/si-kids/best-...alie-masks-90s
Examples:
-Belfour's Eagle masks
-Hirsh's haunted house mask
-Kidd's Dragons
-Cujo's "Cujo the dog" masks
Not Shown:
-Vanbiesbrouck's Panthers Mask
Maybe goalie's these days change their masks too often to have a trademark look but I miss that. Even Kipper did it with the skulls.
