This is really great, and the school of architecture in one of the best designed buildings of the early-80s boom is a great fit.
But the big win is bringing students into downtown. I always felt that a real downtown campus would spur conversion of office buildings into student accommodation and bring vibrancy to the area.
Also, students are a much better fit than standard apartments in many cases.
It's costly to make these office buildings into 'regular apartments' due to plumbing issues ceiling height, and building layout. But the layout with lots of offices around a central core is great for students who don't need a 5-star apartment, and can cope with shared washrooms if it means a cheaper rent.

I mean we know that there's already students from various post-secondary institutions downtown right?

Yes, the article mentions it. Still think it is significant that SAPL will be bringing 1200 students into that area, and the Petro Fina building is offering preferential lease rates to students in those programs.

It is, but don't kid yourself, it's not nearly as groundbreaking as it seems.

Correct, the former Nexen building is already standing. There will be no groundbreaking required.

The students are already DT but yes, relocating them to this area has benefits and offers potential for student accommodation. Any word on whether UCalgary will be relocating their other DT campus operations into the Nexen building? It's only a block away.

CBDL suuuucks though, or so I've heard from students attending class there. And up until the end of this term they were also in the professional faculties building at the UofC, which they preferred to CBDL.

New proposal for the 1200 block of 5th avenue NW, The Harriet on Riley Park. Page has some information and basic massing and shadow studies of the proposed two towers. I do like how they are rotating the orientation of the towers for lighting purposes.

Attainable Homes Calgary has released the first rendering of their project for the Triangle lot in Sunnyside on 2nd avenue. It will be built using pre-made ATCO units and assembled on site.

Big rumour that today will be an announcement for a pretty substantial build on the Truman homes site at Stampede Station. The parking lot between 14th and 15th avenue and Macleod Trail.

Hopefully taller than that box in Shelbyville. Time to take back our rightful crown.

Those look insane, very cool.
Thoughts and prayers to anyone who owns an east-facing view in the Sasso and Vetro condos that enjoyed their prime view of the Canada Day and Stampede fireworks, because that's not long for this world with those two going in. Time to sell!

I'd hang tight and see if these going in clean up the street level area. That sure wouldn't hurt resale value.

For the north, south, and west-facing suites, sure, they'll benefit from it. Anyone whose view is facing east is going from "I get sun in the morning" to "I get to stare at a massive glass hotel". Those units are gonna get very dark in the daytime, similar to how a north-facing view would. I'm condo shopping right now so I'm sort of immersed in evaluating how units are going to feel depending on time of day and their surroundings. I looked at a place in Castello on 12 Ave that was a north-facing unit, and I felt like it would have been a depressing unit to live in for how little natural light got in there.

Ok this is funny... this project was just brought up in the office, and one of the guys here realized that he's going to be in exactly the scenario you're talking about. He lives in an east facing unit in one of those condos and his view is about to be vaporized. He is not a happy camper.

Still can't really nail down Truman's wording, but it sounds like the 69 storey tower could beat out Stantec up in Edmonton. Which is good and will bring balance back to the force.
